Khan wants his next fight in the UK, could Prescott be next?

Image: Khan wants his next fight in the UK, could Prescott be next?By Jim Dower: Provided that WBA light welterweight champion Amir Khan (23-1, 17 KO’s) beats challenger Marcos Maidana (29-1, 27 KO’s) tonight in Las Vegas, Khan will likely be fighting in the UK possibly in Manchester in his next fight. This won’t likely be against the winner of the Devon Alexander vs. Timothy Bradley bout, however. Instead, it will be a stay busy fight for Khan to fight in front of his fans in England. Bradley or Alexander wouldn’t fight in England now, and HBO likely wouldn’t go for the idea either since the difference times zones would make it so that the fight would be either on delay or it would have to be shown during non-prime time and that’s not going to happen.

One opponent that Khan and his promoters could be interested in fighting is Colombian knockout artist Breidis Prescott (23-2, 19 KO’s), who easily knocked Khan out in 1 round in September 2008. Khan’s promoters have kept Khan away from a rematch with Prescott and he’s taken criticism because of that and because Khan has been put in with nothing but weak punchers ever since. Khan has a reputation for having a weak chin. By having Khan fight Prescott again, it will give boxing fans a chance to see Khan prove that he can beat a guy that dominated him. It’s also a fight that would sell well in the UK.

There’s talk that Schaefer is considering Prescott and recently knocked out Michael Katsidis for Khan’s UK fight. Prescott might be the better option because of his prior history against Khan. Prescott has much better power than Katsidis and can punch with both hands. A fight between Khan and Katsidis would be less interesting given that Katsidis was just knocked out by Juan Manuel Marquez in his last fight, and that would make it seem like Khan and his promoters were cherry picking beaten up fighters to make Khan look good.

However, Prescott has lost two out of his last five bouts since the Khan win. He got out-boxed by Miguel Vazquez last year and then lost a fight with Kevin Mitchell in the UK. That fight was a hard to score because Prescott was landing power shots in every round, whereas Mitchell was mostly just jabbing and running. I had Prescott winning that fight because Mitchell was running too much and his jabs were no match for the big shots was getting hit with. But whatever the case, it still counts as a loss and that might make Khan and his promoters hesitant to fight Prescott. Katsidis would be the easier fight because he has no real power other than in his left hand, and he’s not very tall. Prescott, 5’11”, would have an inch height advantage over Khan and has much longer arms. For this reason, I can see Khan and his promoters reluctant to fight Prescott because he matches up well with Khan and it may be someone that he could never beat.
