Katsidis wants Khan bout

By Dan Ambrose: Recently defeated lightweight Michael Katsidis (27-3, 22 KO’s) wants a fight with WBA light welterweight champion Amir Khan (24-1, 17 KO’s) in early 2011 according to the latest boxing news.

Katsidis’ manager/trainer Brendon Smith thinks it would be a great fight that would interest a lot of boxing fans in the UK.

However, given how much punishment that Katsidis took in his loss to Juan Manuel Marquez in November, Katsidis may be not be the most ideal opponent for Khan to be fighting right now.

Fans aren’t expecting much from Khan because he was just in a war with Marcos Maidana on December 11th and barely survived that fight without getting knocked out. But fans at least will probably want Khan’s opponent to have not been beaten up the way Katsidis was in his last bout and knocked out in the 9th.

Speaking with AAP, Katsidis’s manager/trainer, Brendon Smith, said “I believe that (Katsidis-Khan) is a fight would absolutely fill anywhere in England, and that’s a fight that would be watched all over the world and it makes a great fight. Michael is two out of two in England and whether Amir Khan takes that into consideration and whether he wants to try and square up for the Pommies…he may have his own agenda.”

It might be better if Khan at least fight someone in his own weight division and not go looking to cherry pick a smaller fighter like Katsidis from the lightweight division. While this would have been a decent fight when Khan was a lightweight, he’s not fighting at that weight now and it would look bad if he were to select a smaller guy like Katsidis that’s coming off a bad beating by Marquez.
