Who really runs boxing? The Cable TV giants, the boxing promoters or the alphabet boxing organizations?

By Allen Hmiel: I am totally confused and stumped. Who is actually in charge of the sport of Boxing today? Do the various Boxing Organizations really have a say in who fights who for their championship belts? Or do the powerful Promoters Arum-King-Golden Boy (Oscar)-Goosen-Dibella-Shaw match up fighters from their stables and sell to the highest bidders? Can the HBO’s and Showtime networks dictate to the Boxing Organizations who fights who? Can the powerful dominate promoters match up fighters for championship fights without the Organizations really having a say in the match-ups.

Do boxing rankings really matter at all. How do fighters who are not ranked get title shots over much more deserving hard working fighters who paid their dues by fighting and winning and earning their rankings. How does an un-ranked fighter get a title shot? It is who you know or who a fighter is aligned with that earns a title shot?

Are championship fights really championship fights when one of the opponents isn’t ranked or in the top six in their division? Are fans being robbed? Are we being the denied the opportunity to see the best fighters fight for the titles? From what I see is a complete power grab by the Cable companies telling the Boxing Organizations that they want ratings and good fights with known popular fighters and I see the promoters matching up their own loyal fighters in their own fights.

What power if any do the Boxing Organizations really have in the saying of who fights for their titles in each division? Should there be one National or one Worldwide Boxing Commission that dictates through merit and ring productivity and talent what fighters have earned a title opportunity. From my vantage point as a fan, I see championship fights being made that are confusing and questionable with some opponents bypassing other much more deserving fighters who earned their way and their records.

Why is this happening? Who controls the sport of Boxing? I don’t think anyone controls boxing and it is a free for all of who fights who for what championship belts at any given time and is willing to put up the right purse monies and match up the two fighters regardless of merit.

Some might wonder why Boxing popularity has dwindled so much the past ten years, but with no one actually controlling the sport and so many Organizations and promoters and Cable companies having a powerful say so, everything is up for grabs because boxing today is structureless and out of control!!
