Coyle stops Katsidis; Campbell defeats Brizuela

katsidis6By Scott Gilfoid: 34-year-old Michael Katsidis (30-7, 24 KOs) ran into a left hook that he didn’t see from lightweight Tommy Coyle (20-2, 9 KOs) and was knocked out in the 2nd round on Saturday night at the Hull Arena in Hull, England.

To his credit, Katsidis did get back to his feet and was ready to continue fighting, but the referee halted the fight anyway. We’ll never know for sure whether Katsidis could have kept fighting or not, because the referee took the opportunity away from him by stopping the fight.

Katsidis-Coyle & Campbell-Brizuela tonight

coyleBy Scott Gilfoid: IBF International lightweight strap holder Tommy Coyle (19-2, 8 KOs) will be defending his title against 34-year-old former world title challenger Michael Katsidis (30-6, 24 KOs) in a 12 round fight tonight at the Hull Arena, Hull, Yorkshire, United Kingdom.

This isn’t much of a fight in terms of quality, because neither of these guys are world level. Katsidis used to be a world level guy 4 years ago, but he’s far removed from that.

Mitchell thinks Katsidis could stop Coyle

katsidis223By Scott Gilfoid: Kevin Mitchell, one of Michael Katsidis’ former knockout victims, thinks the 34-year-old Katsidis could knockout the 25-year-old Tommy Coyle (19-2, 8 KOs) in their fight this Saturday night at the Hull Arena, Hull, Yorkshire, United Kingdom.

Mitchell notes that Coyle likes to stand in front of his opponents slugging it out. If he tries that tactic with Katsidis on Saturday night, then Mitchell thinks Katsidis will blast Coyle to smithereens in short order in 4-5 rounds.

Michael Katsidis vs. Tommy Coyle on October 25th

katsidis223By Scott Gilfoid: Michael Katsidis (30-6, 24 KOs) will be taking a step up in competition in facing Tommy Coyle (19-2, 8 KOs) in a 12 round bout on October 25th at the Hull Arena, Hull, Yorkshire, United Kingdom.

Katsidis was out of the ring for 2 years after retiring. He made his comeback in defeating Eddy Comaro earlier this year by a 3rd round TKO. In his last fight, Katsidis defeated Graham Early by a 12 round unanimous decision last July.

Michael Katsidis vs. Graham Earl II this Friday, July 4th in Australia

katsidis23By Scott Gilfoid: In what has to be seen as an old timers fight that is 7 years too late, Michael Katsidis (29-6, 24 KO’s) will be fighting a rematch against 35-year-old Graham Earl (26-4, 12 KO’s) this Friday, July 4th in a scheduled 12 round bout for the vacant World Boxing Union light welterweight title at the Rumours International, in Toowoomba, Queensland, Australia.

The fact that there’s a minor title on the line is troubling because it makes no sense to have these two fighters battling for a minor title given that Earl hasn’t fought in the past 5 years since 2009, and Katsidis, 33, has fought only once in the past 2 years. Katsidis stopped fighting after a loss to Albert Mensah in April 2012, and then didn’t come back until March, 2014 when he beat a fighter named Eddy Comaro by a 3rd round knockout.

Michael Katsidis vs. Graham Earl 2 rematch on July 4th in Australia

katsidis56378By Scott Gilfoid: Michael Katsidis (29-6, 24 KO’s) will be facing the rusty 35-year-old Granham Earl (26-4, 12 KO’s) on fourth of July at the Rumours International, Toowoomba, Queensland, Australia. This is a rematch of their February 2007 fight, which Katsidis easily won in 5 rounds. That loss was the beginning of the end for Earl’s career, as he fought only three more times after that, losing to a young Amir Khan and Henry Castle before wrapping up his career with a win over Karl Taylor in June of 2009.

The 5’5″ Earl hasn’t fought since 2009, and it makes it very difficult to get excited about this rematch given the huge amount of time that Earl has been out of the ring. I mean, I wouldn’t mind seeing the fight just for kicks if Earl had a half dozen tune-up fights under his belt to show that he can beat at least 3rd tier opposition, but that’s not what they’re doing here. Earl is using the Ricky Hatton comeback approach by diving straight into a tough fight without any tune-ups at all. That makes me think this is just a money grab and nothing more.

Katsidis stops Comara in 3rd round

By Jim Dower: Fighting for the first time in two years, 33-year-old lightweight Michael Katsidis (29-6, 24 KO’s) halted journeyman Eddy Comaro (27-18-5, 11 KO’s) in the 3rd round on Friday night at the Rumours International, Toowoomba, Queensland, Australia. Katsidis knocked Comara down three times in the fight in dropping him once in the 2nd and two more times in the 3rd round before the referee halted the fight. Comara appeared to lose interest in the fight after getting hit in the back of the head with a rabbit punch in the 2nd round.

Michael Katsidis vs. Eddy Comaro this Friday, March 14th in Australia

katsidis334By Allan Fox: This Friday night, 33-year-old Michael Katsidis (28-6, 23 KO’s) will be making a comeback in facing super featherweight journeyman Eddy Comaro (27-17-5, 11 KO’s) in a scheduled 10 round bout at the Rumours International, Toowoomba, Queensland, Australia. At one time one of the best fighters in the lightweight division, Katsidis hasn’t fought since losing a narrow 10 round majority decision to the much bigger Albert Mensah in April of 2012.

In his bout before that, Katsidis had been beaten by then interim WBO lightweight champion Ricky Burns. As it is, Katsidis has lost 4 out of his last 5 fights.
