Donaire looked huge compared to Sidorenko

By Chris Williams: In looking at Nonito Donaire’s win over Wladimir Sidorenko last Saturday night, I couldn’t help notice how much bigger Donaire was compared to Sidorenko. Donaire looked to be at least 15 pounds heavier than Sidorenko, and I wouldn’t be surprised if it were even more than that. Donaire already had the two inch height advantage over the 5’4″ Sidorenko, but Donaire looked heavier all around than the Ukrainian. I’m noticing that Donaire is often a lot bigger than the guys that he’s been facing. The smallish Sidorenko never had a chance and was run over by Donaire in four rounds and ended up with a broken nose for his trouble.

Donaire has also been the bigger fighter in his fights at flyweight and super flyweight. Having a big size advantage over guys that are much smaller really helps Donaire. I’m wondering what’s going to happen once Donaire moves up in weight. I expect him to get knocked out first by Fernando Montiel, but I can see Donaire having lots of problems when he starts facing guys his own size and isn’t able to tower over them like he’s been doing at flyweight and super flyweight the past few years. Height is only small part.

I think Donaire is going to struggle against guys that are as big as him in weight, because he won’t be able to dominate them with power like he’s doing now against the smaller guys. When that happens, we may see Donaire getting beaten up. But the good thing is he can always drop weight and go back to flyweight or super flyweight and try and make it back down there.
