38-year-old Mormeck wants rematch with Haye

By Dan Ambrose: Former WBA/WBC cruiserweight champion Jean Marc Mormeck (36-4, 22 KO’s) says he wants a rematch with World Boxing Association (WBA) heavyweight champion David Haye (25-1, 23 KO’s), who beat him three years ago in a 7th round TKO win in November 2007. Mormeck, now 38, has since moved up to the heavyweight division and is currently ranked #10 IBF and #12 WBA. Mormeck struggled on Thursday to defeat 2nd tier heavyweight Timur Ibragimov, beating him by a narrow 12 round split decision at the Halle Carpentier, Paris XIII, Paris, France.

This was Mormeck’s second narrow victory over a 2nd tier heavyweight in 2010. Earlier this year, Mormeck defeated 37-year-old Fres Oquendo by a controversial 10 round decision in May, a fight that also took place in Paris, France.

After his win over Ibragimov last Thursday, Mormeck said “Since Haye is afraid of no one, he should give me my shot at revenge in Paris. Give me three or four months to train with the right kind of sparring partners and I’ll be ready.”

Mormeck knocked Haye down in the 4th round of their fight three years ago but was unable to finish him off and got taken out by Haye. At this point, it’s highly unlikely that Haye is going to see fit to take on Mormeck in a rematch, even though Haye does appear to be milking his title and staying away form heavyweights that would potentially be a threat to beating him like the Klitschko brothers and some of the other top contenders in the division.

Haye would face heavy criticism if he were to turn around and fight the 38-year-old Mormeck, because Haye’s last opponent 39-year-old Audley Harrison stunk up the joint by throwing only one punch in their fight last month. And Haye’s other fights at heavyweight have come against nothing but aging heavyweights with 38-year-old Monte Barrett, 36-year-old Nikolay Valuev, and 38-year-old John Ruiz. Mormeck would fit in with the kinds of fighters that Haye has been feasting on at heavyweight but it would make him look silly.
