Glen Johnson will not win the Super Six tournament

Image: Glen Johnson will not win the Super Six tournamentBy Scott Gilfoid: Yahoo Sports writer Kevin Iole says that 41-year-old Glen Johnson (50-14-2, 34 KO’s) will be the one to benefit now that Mikkel Kessler and Andre Dirrell have been forced to drop out of the Super Six tournament but I’m not so sure about that. Johnson has lost two out of his last three fights against Chad Dawson and Tavoris Cloud, and I doubt Johnson has much left in him to do anything other than throw a lot of weak punches and get beat.

Showtime picked positively the worst possible fighter to replace Kessler when they opted for Johnson. He just finished showing in defeat to Cloud that he can’t even make 175 without draining himself of water to get to the limit, and how can you expect Johnson to get down to 168 without draining himself even more. I think Johnson is going to lose to whoever he faces in the tournament.

Sure, in the best possible world, Johnson could turn around and beat Allan Green in their fight on November 6th, and then beat Carl Froch, Arthur Abraham or Andre Ward, but I don’t see that happening. Maybe Johnson can get by Green if Allan fights as poorly as he did in his fight with Andre Ward, but that’s the end of the road. Johnson won’t beat Abraham nor will he beat Ward or Froch.

He may give it a good try in losing, but I fail to see how that will benefit him any if he’s not good enough to win. He’s already a gatekeeper in the light heavyweight division, so what more will it do for him in that regard?

At 41 and soon to be 42, it isn’t like Johnson has a lot of time to capitalize on getting beaten in the Super Six tournament. Johnson needs to knock Green out, and that isn’t going to happen. Where’s the victory if Johnson isn’t able to follow up with any other wins.
