Dirrell is still going to be a huge star

Image: Dirrell is still going to be a huge starBy Scott Gilfoid: I was amused to read how everyone is practically writing Andre Dirrell (19-1, 13 KO’s) just because he had to pull out of the Super Six tournament due to him having headaches and episodes of dizziness related to the foul that he sustained in the 11th round of his Super Six fight against Arthur Abraham last March.

A doctor advised for Dirrell to take some time off and rest for three months to allow for these symptoms to clear up. Dirrell is going to be okay. There’s no way his career is over, and let’s be clear on this – Dirrell wanted to continue in the Super Six tournament.

It wasn’t his idea to drop out of the tournament. We would have gone out on his shield rather than quit the tournament when he was on the verge of greatness. But what can you say when a doctor advises you not to fight?

The choice was taken completely out of Dirrell’s hands in this. It wasn’t because he didn’t want to fight his good friend Andre Ward. I’ve seen how some boxing fans are thinking that Dirrell pulled out of the tournament just so he wouldn’t have to face Ward and possible ruin their close friendship.

Dirrell and Ward are complete professionals and there’s no way they would back out of a fight for this reason. Dirrell was going to honor his agreement with Showtime and fight Ward, even if he might have hated the idea inside. But when you get hurt from someone that fouls you after you fall down, how can you continue in the tournament?

You don’t expect Dirrell to go out there and risk getting crippled or killed, do you? I’m sure Dirrell and Ward will fight at some point in the future, so for the rabid boxing fans that are upset that they didn’t get to see this fight, they need to put a sock in it.

Dirrell and Ward will fight eventually when the time is right. But in the meantime, these fans can still enjoy watching Ward win the entire Super Six tournament by beating Carl Froch and or Arthur Abraham.

Neither of those fighters stand a chance against Ward. This is going to be a major slaughter when he does face either of them and I’m looking forward to those fights with pleasure.
