By Jim Dower: World Boxing Association heavyweight champion David Haye (24-1, 22 KO’s) still hasn’t decided who he will be fighting next. In an interview at ojopelao.com, Haye says he’s “taken a long holiday, resting a lot and sharing with the family. I don’t know yet [who he will be fighting next]. I haven’t ruled out the Klitschko brothers, and also there are other interesting names to take into account. My developers and my manager are in on that.” Well, it’s too late for Haye to be fighting either of the Klitschko brothers next unless Haye is interested in taking a really long break in between fights. As it is, Haye hasn’t fought since April and still hasn’t picked out his next opponent.

It would be a minor miracle if Haye fights before November, and that would mean that Haye will have waited at least six months or more between fights. Many boxing fans feel that Haye will likely fight 38-year-old Audley Harrison next. If not him, it could be someone like Tomasz Adamek or Ruslan Chagaev.

Khan, who came to watch Juan Manuel Marquez beat Juan Diaz tonight in Las Vegas, said “I would like to see myself with Marquez in December for my next fight. I have a date open for December 11th, and need to find a place for the fight, but I will be ready.” Khan may not be happy that Marquez failed to mention his name when he spoke about whom he wanted to fight next. Instead of bringing up Khan’s name tonight, Marquez said he’d like to fight Manny Pacquiao in December.

Since the chances of that happening are almost zero, Marquez may have to dramatically downgrade his ambitions and settle for the younger, less popular 23-year-old Khan in a much smaller fight at light welterweight. However, if Marquez does decide to move up in weight to take this fight at light welterweight, he could be potentially flushing away a future shot against Pacquiao if he ends up getting out-boxed by Khan. Marquez isn’t as tall as Khan and Amir is likely to be hitting and moving all night long, and not letting Marquez get near enough to get his shots off.

If Marquez had huge power like Breidis Prescott, this would be an easy fight for him because he could simply go out and stun Khan with a jab and then knock him cold. However, Marquez doesn’t have power like Prescott and would have to hope to wear Khan down with power shots and possibly get a stoppage by landing a mass accumulation of shots. Freddie Roach, Khan’s trainer, would likely have Khan running from the word go, and won’t be giving Marquez chances to land his punches. Because of his lack of size and power, and because of his advanced age, Marquez should stick to fighting lightweights.
