Calderon vs. Segura II this Saturday, 4/2

By Jim Dower: Former two division world champion Ivan Calderon (34-1-1, 6 KO’s) faces knockout artist WBO light flyweight champion Giovanni Segura (26-1-1, 22 KO’s) in a rematch this Saturday at the Auditorio del Estado, in Mexicali, Mexico.

The 36-year-old five-foot Calderon was blown out by Segura in an 8th round TKO last year in August 2010. Instead of recognizing that the 5’4” 28-year-old Segura is simply too big, too young and too strong for him, Calderon has decided to try and fight him again to see if he can beat him in a rematch and try and recapture his WBO light flyweight title that Calderon lost last year in the Segura fight.

For Segura, this will be his last fight at light flyweight because he is simply too big to make weight anymore without draining himself. By the time he rehydrates this Saturday night, he should have a significant weight advantage over Calderon to go along with his four inch height and six inch reach advantage.

This isn’t a good fight for Calderon because he was drilled into submission last time he fought Segura, and it’s hard to see how anything will change this time around. Segura has fought once since the Calderon fight, blowing out Manuel Vargas in a 7th round stoppage in November.

Calderon hasn’t fought since the loss to Segura. Perhaps the money is good for Calderon, because that’s about the only reason I can see him taking this fight. He doesn’t have the size or the power to compete with this guy and it’s going to likely be just as brutal if not more than the last time he fought him.
