By William Mackay: Allan Green (29-1, 20 KO’s) talks about having a secret weapon that he plans on using against WBA super middleweight champion Andre Ward (21-0, 13 KO’s) on June 19th in his first Super Six tournament bout at the Oracle Arena, in Oakland, California. Green, 30, has to come up with some way for him to deal with the movement and the counter punching ability of the 26-year-old Ward if he wants to win this fight and increase his chances of making the semi finals of the tournament.

This is going to be a huge step up for Green from the kinds of fighters that he’s been facing. However, he’s got the physical tools in the way of speed and power to get past Ward but he’s got to be able to use the tools often enough to beat Ward. It’s not easy to hit Ward because he’s got an uncanny ability to get out of the way of incoming fire. So, Green is going to have to have a really good secret plan if he’s going to be able to get his shots in.

Guessing what Green’s secret plan will be in this fight is kind of hard to do, because there’s really no set idea that Green can rely on to beat Ward because he’s constantly changing his fighting approach on the fly and isn’t someone that does the same thing over and over again like some fighters do.

Green would do well if his secret plan involved using his jab a lot. He needs to be throwing a lot of jabs to slow Ward down and keep him from rushing forward quite so much to land his shots. Green might also do well to avoid loading up too much, looking for one big shot. Ward isn’t like the 2nd tier opposition that Green has been feasting on during most of his career and won’t be one that can be mowed down with single shots.

Green has to put his punches together and not look for that one big shot to win this fight. That’s something that Green has had problems win the last couple of years. He’s gotten accustomed to hurting his opponents with single shots and then throwing a flurry to get them out.

It’s a similar style as WBA heavyweight champion David Haye, who also likes to throw big pot shots to try and hurt his opponents. In this case, Green has to forget about loading up so much and think more about just making contact and putting his punches together more. That would be a much better secret weapon that using normal style of trying to hurt his opponents with one big shot and then overwhelming them with punches once their hurt.
