dawson43449By Jim Dower: Unbeaten former IBF/WBC light heavyweight champion Chad Dawson (28-0, 17 KO’s) is interested in possibly replacing Jermain Taylor in the Super Six tournament if Taylor decides to back out, according to boxing news from the The Sweet Science. This would be a sensational replacement if Taylor does decide to pull out of the tourney, because Dawson is considered to be one of the best fighters in the sport and would immediately have an effect on the tournament.

As of now, many boxing experts are predicting that either Arthur Abraham or Mikkel Kessler will be the eventual Super Six tournament winner. However, with Dawson entering as a replacement for Taylor, the experts would have to rethink their picks because Dawson is bigger, faster and much more dangerous than Taylor was. Kessler would be facing a fighter that is even quicker than Joe Calzaghe, who defeated Kessler with quickness in a 12 round decision victory in 2007.

Abraham, a big puncher but who suffers from a poor work rate and slow hand speed would have to deal with Dawson’s quickness. If Abraham couldn’t solve the big southpaw Dawson’s speed, there’s little question that Abraham would lose by a lopsided decision. Abraham would likely have a hard time winning even a round against Dawson unless Chad decided to take a round or two off like he did against Antonio Tarver.

However, all this hinges not only on Taylor dropping out of the Super Six tournament, which it’s unclear right now whether he’ll do that, and if Dawson can get by his November 7th opponent Glen Johnson. Most people, this writer included, feel that Dawson should easily win the rematch against Johnson by a fairly lopsided 12 round decision but there’s still a small chance that Dawson could lose.

It would have to be a major break down for Dawson to lose, though, because he dominated Johnson last time out in their fight last year in April. The only time that Johnson was able to do anything was when Dawson took rounds of to rest. When Dawson wanted to, however, he put his foot down on the accelerator and easily dominated Johnson.

Not only is Dawson interested in fighting in the Super Six tourney, but also Dawson’s promoter Gary Shaw, who is all for Dawson stepping in and taking part in the six fighter tournament. Shaw had this to say about Dawson taking part in the Super Six tournament: “I know he’d be welcomed into the tourney and would win it convincingly, even though I have Andre Dirrell.”

Shaw’s other fighter, the young 27-year-old Dirrell, lost a controversial 12 round decision to World Boxing Council super middleweight champion Carl Froch in what many boxing fans are saying was a home town decision. Dawson has hand speed similar to that of Dirrell and perhaps better power. Dawson and Dirrell would be like a one-two punch for the Super Six tournament and it would make it very tough on the other fighters in the tournament, perhaps even the favored Kessler and Abraham.
