dawson100By Dan Ambrose: This Saturday night former IBF/WBC light heavyweight champion Chad Dawson (32-3, 18 KOs) will be fighting former world title challenger Tommy Karpency (23-4-1, 14 KOs) in a 10 round bout at the Foxwoods Resort, in Mashantucket, Connecticut, USA. This is a tune-up fight for the 32-year-old Dawson.

This fight should give a good indication how much Dawson has left in the tank, because Karpency has a pretty good chin. Dawson may have to go the full 12 rounds with him if he wants to get the victory. Hopefully for Dawson’s sake, he’s not blubbery like he was in his last fight against George Blades last June.

The main event is IBF World super featherweight champion Rances “Kid Blast” Barthelemy (20-0, 8 KOs) defending his International Boxing Federation strap against #3 IBF Fernando David Saucedo (52-5-3, 8 KOs) in decent but hardly interesting crap. Saucedo hasn’t faced a quality opponent since 2010 when he was easily beaten by Chris John by a lopsided 12 round decision.

Saucedo has won his last 11 fights against horrible opposition to get his title shot against Kid Blast. This is the main event, but it should be the first fight of the card in my book because it’s not a good match-up if you’re familiar with Saucedo.

A much more interesting fight on the card is the junior middleweight scrap between the recently beaten Vanes Martirosyan (34-1-1, 21 Kos) and Willie Nelson (23-1-1, 13 KOs) in a 10 round fight. This is a decent but still hardly great fight given that Martirosyan was recently beaten by Dementrius Andrade after he ran out of gas after just 6 rounds.

Martirosyan also ran out of gas in his fight against Erislandy Lara in 2012. Luckily for Martirosyan the fight was stopped in the 9th round after he suffered a cut from a head clash because he was well on his way to losing that fight to Lara.

If Martirosyan loses to Nelson on Saturday then I don’t know where he can go. Nelson is a decent gate keeper type of opponent. If Martirosyan can’t even beat him then he’s going to need to either think about retiring or doing something drastic like moving up or down in weight.
