Is it Me or Does Marquez Look Slow?

By Jason Kim: I don’t know if my eyes are doing tricks on me or not, but Juan Manuel Marquez (50-4-1, 37 KO’s) suddenly looks painfully slow to me when he’s throwing punches. I just finished watching HBO’s Mayweather-Marquez 24/7 pt. 2 and noticed how big and slow Marquez is starting to look.

In the episode, Marquez, who looks like a little stocky wrestler now that he’s put weight, was pounding away at a heavy bag, while his thick in the belly trainer Nacho Beristain urged Marquez to throw punches with more speed. In turn, Marquez continued to throw punches that looked like they were being thrown in slow motion.

I don’t know about you, but I don’t remember Marquez being this slow before in the past. I hope this isn’t the product of him throwing all those boulders in the mountains of Mexico while trying to put on weight. If this is how Marquez is going to look on September 19th against Floyd Mayweather Jr., Marquez needs to step away from those rocks he’s been picking up and stop drinking his own pee and try to work on trimming down a little.

Marquez is much too slow to beat Mayweather looking like that. Beristain looked concerned as if he can see the future and can envision Mayweather beating Marquez black and blue. I’m not even a trainer and I can see it happening with Marquez looking like that. But I really don’t know what Marquez is going to do against Mayweather.

Marquez has already put on all that useless muscle weight and it’s probably too late to take it all off now at this juncture. Marquez looks to have made a huge miscalculation by putting on all that muscle. I think he’d been better off staying at 130 to 135, and fighting Mayweather at a lighter weight rather than putting on nine pounds of muscle and fat.

Obviously, Marquez didn’t put on all muscle because he has fat on his sides and on his waist. Maybe he took it off by now, but that fat and useless muscle seems to be something that isn’t exactly helping Marquez. He’s looks really slow.

They had him in the ring sparring with some slow sparring partner who I imagine was supposed to be mimicking Mayweather’s style of fighting. The thing of it was the sparring partner, although slow and not exactly athletic, was nailing Marquez repeatedly as if it was the real Mayweather sparring Marquez instead of some short, fat slightly fat guy.

That’s not a good sign of your a Marquez fan. If Marquez is getting nailed over and over again by some slow and fat sparring partner, how is he going to do against the real thing? Mayweather might be rusty from inaction, but he’s still probably more than fast enough to take advantage of Marquez if he looks like this.

I don’t care how much muscle Marquez has put on, it looks like useless show muscle that can’t be used. For Mayweather, he hasn’t had to put on any weight for this fight like Marquez and will be as light as usual for this fight.
