Heavyweight Boxing: We Need a Spark

The days of young heavyweight contenders at age 21 or 22 are over as are the days of wars such as “The Thrilla in Manila” and “The Rumble in the Jungle”. We are stuck with boring heavyweights like the Klitschko brothers or ones of no skill such as Nikolay Valuev.

The recent championship bout between Vitali Klitschko(38-2 37ko’s) and the “prospect” Chris Arreola (27-1 24 KO’s) left something to be desired. Klitschko looked strong in the bout but Arreola looked like he was carrying 40lbs of lard around his waist, oh wait he was! Lets evaluate the heavyweight division. We have the two Klitschko brothers, Vitali at 38 will be retiring soon, Wladimir (53-3 47ko’s) at 33 will hopefully stick around a few more years after his brother. Nikolay Valuev will hopefully retire if/when David Haye beats him later this year.

So over the next let’s say 5 years we may have Chris Arreola if he can lose some weight and step up his game, we most certainly will have David Haye (22-1 21ko’s) unless he is stopped by a big puncher, we will hopefully see some life in Eddie Chambers (35-1 18ko’s) as he looks to have a good chin and a hard punch. The final man that will stick around as I mentioned earlier will be Wladimir Klitschko, he will beat all of these fighters except Haye I believe. I hope to see Chambers vs. Klitschko with Klitschko winning a decision, Haye destroying Valuev with a late round TKO, Chris Arreola stepping up his game next year and getting in shape before possibly fighting Haye or Klitschko. Arreola has a good chin, not great but good.

Haye has an average chin. Chambers looks to have a good chin. Klitschko has an average chin. The two most skilled fighters, Haye and Klitschko do not have the strong chins that the rougher, tougher Arreola and Chambers do. I hope to see Haye vs. Klitschko make a good fight next year, with Haye hopefully winning as he is closest to a prospect we have. Then I want to see Arreola vs. Chambers with the winner of each fight facing each other. This gives way to some potential wars for the future. Thank you for reading.
