mormeck452345By Chris Williams: Former World Boxing Association/World Boxing Council cruiserweight champion Jean Marc Mormeck (33-4, 22 KOs) is reportedly interested in a rematch with David Haye, and is talking about moving up to the heavyweight division this Summer with hopes of making it happen.

It sounds like a splendidly awful idea and I wonder who helped Mormeck brew up this crazy idea in the first place. Mormeck, for some odd reason, hasn’t fought since losing his WBA/WBC cruiserweight titles to Haye in a 7th round stoppage in October 2007. The smart thing for Mormeck would be to have immediately jumped at getting the belts back after Haye vacated both of them when he moved up to the heavyweight division.

Why Mormeck didn’t choose to do that, I have no idea. But it seems almost insane for him to even consider moving up to heavyweight at this point in his career. At 36, and only 5’11”, Mormeck would be destroyed by pretty much everyone in the top 10 due to his limited height.

And if he Mormeck really wants a bout with Haye, he’ll have to take it under less than desirable conditions because of the three-fight contract that Haye signed with the Klitschko brother’s promotional team K2 East. Haye will be fighting his next three fights for the Klitschkos if he defeats Wladimir on June 20th in Germany.

This would mean by the time that Mormeck finally gets a shot at Haye, Mormeck would be around 38-years-old. I somehow doubt that Haye would find him an appealing opponent at that time, knowing the follow out criticism he’d no doubt take if he made the mistake of choosing to fight the Frenchman.

Apparently, fighting Haye is Mormeck’s final goal of his career and he wants to supposedly work his way into the fight by taking on other heavyweights. I cringe at the thought of who Mormeck might fight. If it’s nothing but a bunch of 2nd and 3rd tier fighters, he might as well forget it and stay and cruiserweight.

At least at that weight he’d have a chance of beating someone like Tomasz Adamek due to his power. I think he’d lose but he’d have a chance. However, if Mormeck gets in the ring with a good heavyweight like Chris Arreola, Alexander Povetkin or Alexander Dimitrenko, he’ll get beat up because of his limited height.

It’s pretty much the same thing that will happen to Haye once he gets in the ring with Wladimir and Vitali Klitschko, but that fights already been signed and Haye is on a crash course for what appears to be disaster.
