green342323By Jim Dower: Super middleweight contender Allan Green (28-1, 20 KOs) destroyed hard hitting Carlos De Leon Jr. (21-3-2, 14 KOs) in the 2nd round of a scheduled 10-round bout on the undercard of the World Boxing Council super middleweight title bout between champion Carl Froch vs. Jermain Taylor on Saturday night at the Foxwoods Resort Casino, in Mashantucket, Connecticut.

After a slow start in the 1st round, Green, 29, came out looking for business in the 2nd round, almost immediately dropping De Leon with a big left hook to the head. De Leon got up ane was then put down three more times before referee Joey Lupino finally stopped the slaughter at 1:54 of the 2nd round.

Green’s win likely opened some eyes, as IBF super middleweight champion Lucian Bute was in attendance and no doubt saw Green’s impressive punching display.

Green mostly jabbed in the opening round, cautiously studying De Leon as if he were about to throw a bomb. For his part, De Leon did little himself in the first two minutes of the round other than throw a few harmless body shots.

In the last minute of the round, De Leon loaded up with a handful of huge left hooks to the body and head of Green. By the end of the round, De Leon was looking confident and in control for the moment.

At the start of the 2nd round, Green jabbed away at De Leon and then suddenly let loose with a big left hook that dropped De Leon to the canvas. He got up and was in really bad shape. It didn’t look like De Leon would make it out of the round unless he was smart enough to clinch for the next two and half minutes.

Instead of clinching, De Leon attempted to land two desperate looking left hooks, both missing badly. Green then calmly tagged him with a left hook that staggered De Leon. Green then landed two big right hands that put De Leon down for the second time.

De Leon got to his feet and was nailed by another big left hook and then two right hands, putting him down for the third time in the round. The referee then told him that if he gets knocked down again he would be stopping the fight.

We didn’t have to wait for long for the knockdown, because Green hit De Leon with a left-right combination and then another big right hand that put De Leon down for the 4th and final time in the round. This time referee Joey Lupino stepped in and stopped the bout at 1:54 of the round.

“The kid (Green refereeing to De Leon) is still green and not at my level,” Allan Green said after the bout. He’s strong, tough, but not that durable. He’s been down six times prior to me. He’s got a good left hook. I let him be brave at the end of the 1st round, because I wanted to open him up at the beginning of the next round. I knew it wouldn’t go past four. My mission was to make a statement to the winner of Jermain Taylor vs. Carl Froch, from Lucian Bute sitting in the front row. He saw it.”

Green then mentioned the fighters that he would like to fight. “Mikkel Kessler. You got a lot of other guys in the division. I’m familiar with the top guys. I really want the winner of this fight (referring to the Taylor-Froch bout), that’s who I want. I knew I would catch him [De Leon] with my left hook. No one can stand this power.”

In other action on the same card, former heavyweight contender Dominick Guinn (31-6-1, 21 KOs) destroyed previously unbeaten Johnnie White (21-1, 18 KOs) in the 1st round of a scheduled 10-round bout. Guinn, 34, hurt White almost immediately with a left hand.

Guinn then put White down with a hard left hook to the head. White, 24, got to his feet and staggered around the ring on legs that could barely keep him upright. The referee Eddie Claudio must have been an a very kind mode, because he let White continue fighting, even though he clearly couldn’t walk without staggering.

Once the action resumed, Guinn attacked White, hitting him with heavy shots as White staggered around the ring like a drunk. Guinn landed some big shots that staggered White even worse than he already was. Referee Eddie Caludio then stepped in and stopped the bout at 2:01 of the 1st round.

White was none too happy with the stoppage and tried to get at Claudio. I suppose he wanted to plead his case or something to that effect. At any rate, Security rushed into the ring and along with White’s team, they escorted him back to his corner.

For Guinn, this is his third consecutive win since losing to journeyman Robert Hawkins by a 10-round decision in December 2007. Guinn is probably going to need a lot more wins like this in order to get himself back in the top 10. Besides the Hawkins loss, Guinn was defeated by Tony Thompson in 2006 and James Toney in 2005.
