Kessler calls his win over Green a “Great victory”

Image: Kessler calls his win over Green a “Great victory”By Scott Gilfoid: Mikkel Kessler survived a big scare against Allan Green after getting badly hurt by a nice right hand to the chin in the 1st round and getting dropped. But Green stopped punching as soon as he started and let Kessler off the hook after the knockdown. Green posed little threat for the remainder of the fight and was quickly dispatched in the 4th round.

Kessler said afterwards “This was a great victory for me. I had to get rid of ring rust in the first round, but once I got going, everything went according to plan.”

I’ve got a question: Why in the heck is Kessler calling this a great victory? He and his promoters did hand pick Green from the near bottom of the IBF light heavyweight rankings, didn’t he? So how in the world is this a great victory for Kessler? If this is a great victory then I think Kessler’s standards have really dropped, because this shouldn’t have been a great victory. When pick out a guy from near the bottom of the top 15 and beat him, it shouldn’t be considered a great victory unless there’s something going on here.

Like I said before, if Green hadn’t stopped punching as soon as he started in the 1st, we’d have likely been picking Kessler up from the canvas with a giant spatula instead of praising him for a win over Green.

This win leaves a lot of questions about what Kessler can do against better opposition. If he’s getting dropped by the likes of Green, then what will happen when Kessler faces someone good like Lucian Bute or Chad Dawson? I wouldn’t like to see Kessler face those guys because they would give him tons of problems, and we could see him get spanked again like he was against Andre Ward in 2009.
