Danny Garcia: I can beat any fighter in the game with my style

IMG_7639(Photo credit: Ed Diller/DiBella Entertainment) By Dan Ambrose: Danny Garcia (30-0, 17 KOs) is coming into his fight on Saturday night very confident that he’ll defeat Paulie Malignaggi (33-6, 7 KOs) in their fight at 147 at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. Garcia says he’s feeling strong at the new weight in moving up from light welterweight, and he believes that his fighting style will enable him to defeat anyone in the game.

Garcia isn’t naming who his style will beat, but if he’s taken literally it means he thinks he can beat Floyd Mayweather Jr., Manny Pacquiao, Errol Spence Jr., Shawn Porter, Marcos Maidana and Tim Bradley. I’d have a hard time picturing Garcia beating any of those fighters, even Bradley.

Garcia did not look good in his last fight against Lamont Peterson. That was a poor performance from Garcia, who was very fortunate to get the victory. Perhaps the only reason he won was because Peterson took too long to get his offense in gear. If he had ramped up earlier in the fight by coming on starting in the 5th, Garcia would be 29-1 instead of 30-0, and he’d be laughed at if he were to say his style beats any fighter in the game.

“My style is made to beat any fighter in the game. I’m sure he trained hard, but we’re going to get this victory,” Garcia said. “I don’t think anybody can beat a 110 percent Danny Garcia. At the end of the day, I know I beat a lot of good fighters, and I’m going to show my heart in the ring.”

Garcia is going to need to push his adviser Al Haymon to match him up against the best fighters in the game after he gets done with the 34-year-old Malignaggi, because he’s not one of the best fighters in the game. Malignaggi is a fighter who appears to be on his last legs coming back for a payday after having sat out of the game for an entire year after his loss to Porter in 2014.

If Haymon is going to match Garcia against Malignaggi types over and over again, then we’re not going to be able to see Garcia test his theory about him being the best fighter in the game. The problem with Garcia moving up to welterweight is there’s not a lot of soft opponents for him to fight in this division.

When you get to the top, the good fighters at 147 can all punch and most of them have better hand speed than Garcia. If Haymon does intend on matching Garcia against the best at 147, then he’s going to have to face the likes of Porter, Spence Keith Thurman, Amir Khan, Pacquiao and Mayweather.

Maidana is kind of a question mark right now. He’s gained a lot of weight and it’s unclear if he’s even going to be coming back in 2016. But if he does, then he’s also someone that could stand in the way of Garcia if he’s interested in picking up a world title and defending it.

“There’s no pressure, but I’m looking forward to an excellent performance,” Garcia said. “I’m ready to fight today if the fight was today. I feel faster at 147. I won’t be flat-footed in there. You’re going to see it all on Saturday. I feel like I’m one of the most versatile fighters in the sport. I’m going to feel strong for 12 rounds on Saturday. I’ve felt strong all camp.”

It’s too bad Haymon selected Malignaggi for Garcia, because it would have been nice to see Garcia fight someone that is actually a top fighter at 147. Malignaggi at this point is Rod Salka 2.0. He doesn’t have any punching power whatsoever and he doesn’t belong at welterweight.

I don’t consider Malignaggi a welterweight, even though he moved up in weight in 2010 and won a world title off of former WBA champion Vyacheslav Senchenko. Malignaggi doesn’t have anything to keep Garcia off of him. Unless Malignaggi runs all night long, he’s not going to be able to stand in the pocket and trade with Garcia. Malignaggi certainly isn’t going to be able to walk Garcia down like Lamont Peterson did last April.
