By Chris Williams: Amir Khan, who was hoping to get a fight against Floyd Mayweather Jr or Manny Pacquiao, thinks their fight in May will be a potentially boring affair with Mayweather winning but making it boring with his boxing skills.
Khan thinks that it would have been a lot more exciting fight if the two had fought four to five years ago when they were younger. Khan believes that he matches up better against Mayweather than Pacquiao due to his height, reach, speed and style of fighting.
Whether that’s the case or not will likely never be proven because Mayweather has shown little interest in fighting Khan.
“Mayweather might get old overnight. He’s shown he’s getting caught more so he’s not invincible,” Khan said via the Dailymail.co.uk. “He [Pacquiao] will give him a lot of problems early but I think Mayweather will just move on and drift away by picking him off with clean shots and frustrate him. I think it will go the distance but that Mayweather will win by unanimous decision.”
Khan sounds almost like he has sour grapes due to him not getting selected by Mayweather or Pacquiao for a payday fight. Instead of Khan praising the two fighters, Khan is instead criticizing the fight by saying that it’ll be a boring fight, and then taking a shot at Pacquiao by saying that he himself matches up better against Mayweather.
I think boxing fans would believe Khan as being the tougher match-up than Pacquiao if Khan were to have avenged his losses to Breidis Prescott and Danny Garcia. With Khan still not having avenged those losses, all fans have to go by in measuring how he’d do against Mayweather is looking at Khan’s best wins of his career against Zab Judah, Devon Alexander, Paulie Malignaggi, Marcos Maidana and Luis Collazo.
Khan didn’t look particularly good in beating Maidana compared to how Mayweather beat him. Khan was actually very hurt in the Maidana fight in the last three rounds of that fight. Khan did beat Judah, Alexander, Malignaggi and Collazo, but those aren’t big enough names to tell you how Khan would do against a guy like Mayweather.
It’s not going to be what people expect. ‘It could be a boring fight if both of them try to box each other. Some people have such high hopes for the fight but it could be boring,” Khan said. “I don’t think Manny would try to make it boring but Mayweather would. Four or five years ago it would have been a bigger fight than it is now, it won’t be as exciting.’
As I said earlier, it sure does seem like Khan has sour grapes at not getting a fight against Mayweather or Pacquiao. I think the Mayweather-Pacquiao fight will be an exciting one from start to finish with Mayweather staying in the pocket much of the time and beating Pacquiao to the punch.
Mayweather rarely moves a lot, so Khan’s estimation of how Mayweather will fight is totally wrong. Mayweather stands his ground when he fights, and he doesn’t resort to holding, running or pushing off on his opponents like Khan typically does.
