Floyd Mayweather Jr vs. Manny Pacquiao: is it better late than never?

floyd103By Gerardo Granados: The long awaited fight between the two major boxing draws in the sport between Floyd Mayweather Jr and Manny Pacquiao has yet to come to fruition this year, but it seems like the negotiations are taking too long to be arranged.

I personally believe that this fight is past due and that the fighters are no longer in their prime; Pacman is gone and now Pacquiao has a different fighting style but still has the tools needed to defeat Floyd. On the other corner Mayweather Jr will turn 38 years old this month and he is nowhere near where he was six years ago.

I wonder if this fight has taken too long to be made, the keyboard warriors used to battle endlessly every time the fight was supposed to happen and you can see how now the comments made on recent articles have failed to surpass the one thousand mark as in the past years. Maybe fans have grown tired to fight each other at boxing forums, perhaps they got excited and waited for the announcement at the Super Bowl and once again were let down.

Sometimes the shadow of the doubt of who would have won keeps fight fans happier than the result of a past due fight between two boxers who no longer are on the peak of their skills. When Mike Tyson went to prison he left inside the walls the doubt of who would have won if he had faced Evander Holyfield before turning into an undisciplined fighter.

I bet a prime Erik Morales would have defeated Juan Manuel Marquez but that fight wasn’t made due business wise reasons. Who would have won between Aaron Pryor and Sugar Ray Leonard? I think Roberto Duran would have defeated Alexis Arguello but the reader must agree that I could be wrong.

But, there are times when it is too late for a fight, remember the third bout between Sugar Ray Leonard and Roberto Duran? Mike Tyson vs Lennox Lewis? Kostya Tszyu vs Julio Cesar Chavez Sr? Shane Mosley vs Canelo Alvarez?

When the fight finally is announced I will be surprised but not as excited as I was five years ago. I wonder what will be the pay per view price but have little doubt on who will win, back then I had doubts but time has cleared my mind and I have decided on whom to bet in case this bout gets made.

I will watch the fight if it finally is made just as many fight fans around the world; but do the readers think it is better late than never?
