Koncz: We [Pacquiao] are already started going in another direction

pac888By Chris Williams: Michael Koncz, the personal adviser for Manny Pacquiao, says that they’ve already started looking at other options for their next fight in April or May.

Koncz has lost patience with the negotiation process for the Floyd Mayweather Jr vs. Pacquiao fight. He’s saying that they’ve agreed to all the negotiation points which they supposedly have worked out with Mayweather’s management representatives for the negotiations. Koncz now wants Mayweather to sign the contract for the fight.

If he doesn’t by the end of January, then he and Pacquiao will move on towards their secondary option. That opponent is expected to be Top Rank fighter WBA light welterweight champion Jessie Vargas (25-0, 9 KOs), who was given a choice spot on Pacquiao’s last fight card in November. Vargas fought Antonio DeMarco and defeated him on the Pacquiao vs. Chris Algieri card.

“We’ve agreed to all the negotiation points and terms. Manny has signed off on it,” Koncz said via esnewsreporting.com. “We’re waiting on Floyd. So now it’s up to Floyd. We’re not going to sit around and wait for him. We’re hopeful for it to still happen, but we’re already looking at other options. We already started going in another direction, but that doesn’t mean we’ve closed the door on Floyd. It just means we’re not going to sit for weeks out, hoping and waiting,” Koncz said.

Koncz’s impatience for the negotiation process highlights the need for Pacquiao get cooler heads that are skilled at negotiating. Having a guy that is skilled at the give and take of normal negotiations is a must. The fact that Koncz is talking the way he is suggests that he’s not someone that should be involved in negotiations.

Pacquiao needs a skilled guy that knows how to deal with people, and not just get frustrated and quit because it’s taking time. You can understand why Koncz would be like this, because Pacquiao is usually the A-side in the negotiations for his fights against less popular fighters. They basically can give a take it or leave it offers to fighters, and if they don’t agree then walk away from the negotiations.

When you’re talking about Pacquiao fighting guys like Brandon Rios, Chris Algieri, Tim and Bradley, it’s obviously easy for Pacquiao to get his way. But when you switch it up with Pacquiao all of a sudden having to deal with a guy that is more popular than him with better pay per view numbers in Mayweather, it seems like Koncz and Bob Arum, Pacquiao’s promoter, don’t adapt to their new roles. The attitude is still there. We see the impatience, frustration and the desire to quickly quit on the negotiations from their side.

“We’ve done it on his terms, so let’s do it. If not, we’re prepared. We’re still going to fight in April or May whether it’s Floyd or not,” Koncz said. “Everything Floyd asked for, if we didn’t agree to it, we negotiated with his representative and came to an agreement. So it’s done from our side. But it takes two signatures to create a fight. Manny wants the fight for no other reason than to give the fans what they want,” Koncz said.

Mayweather is said to be waiting on Showtime and HBO to iron out their part of the deal before he signs the contract. The two networks are supposed to be televising it jointly. Mayweather obviously isn’t going to sign the contract until this part of the negotiations is complete. It makes sense for Mayweather to wait on the Showtime-HBO deal before he signs the contract.
