Pacquiao asking Mayweather to call him to set up fight

pac12By Chris Williams: In a further sign that will likely be interpreted by some to be a sign of desperation, Manny Pacquiao (55-5-2, 38 KO’s) went on television to ask Floyd Mayweather Jr. (45-0, 26 KO’s) to call him at any time day or night so that the two can line up a mega fight between them. While appearing on Keith Olbermann’s show, Pacquiao sent Mayweather a message to get on the phone and call him so that they can make the fight happen.

To some fans, and perhaps to Mayweather, this will be a sure 100 percent sign that Pacquiao is showing how desperate he is for the fight, because of trying to hype his upcoming April 12th rematch against WBO welterweight champion Tim Bradley (31-0, 12 KO’s), Pacquiao is asking Mayweather to call him to make a fight happen.

Pacquiao said “I want the fight, but it’s up to him [Mayweather]. What I can say now is our line is open 24 hours, 7 days a week. If he will call and say ‘yes’, then the fight will be.”

It’s actually understandable why Pacquiao would want the Mayweather fight. By fighting Mayweather, Pacquiao will likely get as much money as he would for three of his fights. It would be like Pacquiao getting a year and half’s worth of money in one fight. Not only that, but Pacquiao would also have the chance of a possible rematch with Mayweather if their fight were close, controversial or if it involved Pacquiao getting lucky and beating Mayweather. There’s no way that Mayweather would walk away from Pacquiao if he were to lose to him or have an outcome that was controversial. Mayweather would certainly do the right thing by giving the Filipino star a second chance at the apple by fighting him again.

What Pacquiao seem to understand is that Mayweather already gave him the path to take to get a fight with him by telling him that once he’s free and clear of his promoter Bob Arum, then they can talk about fighting each other. But the problem is Pacquiao is still with Arum, and he’s already talking about not wanting to leave him in order to get a fight with Mayweather. If Pacquiao doesn’t want to follow Mayweather’s instructions to get a fight, then he won’t get one. Pacquiao will instead need to be satisfied with fighting Bradley, Juan Manuel Marquez in a fifth fight, and likely the following fighters for the remainder of his career: Mikey Garcia, Ruslan Provodnikov, Mike Alvarado, Brandon Rios, and Terence Crawford.
