Rigondeaux: His fights are boring because he’s so good

rigondeaux67By Gerardo Granados: Last Saturday the undefeated WBA Super World – WBO super bantamweight champion Guillermo Rigondeaux, put up a boxing clinic against former bantamweight champion Joseph Agbeko, dominating the full fight in a 12 round shutout. The challenger lacked the hunger to win while being too cautious. He had the wrong game plan and never adjusted.

Meanwhile, Rigondeaux overall performance was simply superb, but, was it fun to watch? The arena wasn’t full; people started to leave in the last rounds and also were booing.

A friend of mine thinks the fight was boring, but I don’t fully agree with him. I can’t say it was fun to watch. At diverse boxing sites there seems to be different opinions towards the performance of the Chacal, some believe it is unfair that while Floyd Mayweather Jr. does the same he is recognized as the best pound for pound boxer meanwhile Rigondeaux doesn’t receive the recognition that he deserves.

After the fight ended there were boxing personalities who twitted their feelings towards the fight. The President of the World Boxing Organization Mr. Paco Valcarcel twitted: Boxing purist certainly enjoyed another dominant performance of Rigondeaux.

Meanwhile ESPN Golpe A Golpe Boxing Analyst Jorge Eduardo Sanchez twitted: Rigondeaux one of the best in the world. I’ll give him a gold medal and put him on the preliminaries. He can’t head the main event, he is anesthetic.

Boxing expert ESPN icon Dan Rafael twitted: Asking people to watch the Rigo replay is cruel.

The commentators for Mexican television TV AZTECA weren’t pleased with the fight lack of action, even Marco Antonio Barrera and Julio Cesar Chavez Sr. commented that they didn’t liked the fight.
There were sites that did praise Rigondeaux performance but most of the comments were divided by boxing fanatics.

It is great to have different boxing styles, but is it possible to promote or to profit from Rigondeaux or any other prizefighter with a pure boxing style? Boxing purist might be in awe but the rest could not be thrilled. I wonder if the reader is anxious to see the Chacal back in the ring soon or would you prefer to see Brandon Rios engage Ruslan Provodnikov next year? I believe that the customer is always right. What about you?
