Mayweather post about Pacquiao

By Chris Williams: Floyd Mayweather Jr. sent a tweet out earlier today calling it his Christmas card to the world. What’s interesting about the card is how he shows himself offering a fight to Manny Pacquiao in which he makes a $40 million offer for a fight. Pacquiao then turns it down.

The next thing you notice is Pacquiao face down on the canvas in his 6th round stoppage loss to Juan Manuel Marquez last December. The last photo is of Pacquiao praying that Mayweather will call him back and offer the $40 million for the fight.

Mayweather appears to be chronicling a bit of his history with Pacquiao. He reportedly offered Pacquiao $40 million to fight him last year in a take it or leave it offer. Pacquiao wouldn get the $40 million, and Mayweather would take the pay-per-view receipts, whatever that would be. Mayweather says Pacquiao turned down his offer, and instead chose to fight Juan Manuel Marquez last December.

That fight resulted in Pacquiao being knocked out cold in the 6th round by Marquez. Pacquiao then stayed out of the ring for the next 11 months until returning to fight Top Rank fighter Brandon Rios last November. That fight brought in between 475-500,000 PPV buys, whereas Mayweather’s September fight against Saul “Canelo” Alvarez hauled in 2.2 million PPV buys and came close to equaling the all-time PPV record of 2.4 million buys set by Mayweather and Oscar De La Hoya in 2007.

In hindsight, should Pacquiao have accepted the $40 million that Mayweather offered him or was he better off taking less than that to fight Marquez and get knocked out? It seems like the better choice would have been for Pacquiao to accept Mayweather’s offer because not only did Pacquiao make less money in the Marquez fight than he would have gotten to fight Mayweather, but he also missed the next 10 months in staying out of the ring. Who knows how much money he lost by not fighting.
