Schaefer: Ricky Burns’ manager turned down fight with Adrien Broner

broner874By Scott Gilfoid: Well, I guess it really doesn’t matter that WBO lightweight champion Ricky Burns (35-2, 10 KO’s) is still interested in facing IBF lightweight champion Miguel Vazquez (33-3, 13 KO’s) instead of the more lucrative fight against WBC lightweight champion. Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer reached out to Burns’ promoter Frank Warren about a fight on June 15th, but the answer was no, according to Dan Rafael.

Rafael said on his twitter “Schaefer told me he reached out to Warren about @ricksterko facing @AdrienBroner in June sted [instead] of resked [rescheduled] Vazquez. Said Burns manager [Alex Morrison] declined.”

There it is. Broner needs to forget about Burns and now move up to 140 or 147 because it’s academic at this point that the interest just isn’t there from Burns’ side to face him. I don’t even know why Schaefer wasted his time asking Burns’ management about a fight in June because Burns has already bypassed the offer to fight Broner on two other occasions, so it’s not as if there was any indication of interest on his part in fighting Broner.

And now today, Broner said to Burns on his twitter “Come fight me, bi***!” And all Burns could say in response was “You’ve cheered me up a bit today with that.”

Good God, man, what kind of answer is that? I’m really disappointed in you, Burn. How about manning up and taking the fight with Broner. At least in getting whipped you might win some boxing fans by being willing to get in the ring with the most talented fighter in the 135 lb. division.

I hope Broner moves on now and quits hounding Burns for a fight because it’s clear that there’s just no interest. It’s beneath Broner’s dignity to be wasting his breath trying to fight this guy because he clearly has another agenda.

I want to see Broner step up to 140 or 147 and go after the big names in those weight classes. There’s nothing more for him to do at 135 unless he wants to fight Richard Abril, the WBA lightweight champion. That’s a fight that would be ugly, and I can’t see HBO saying yes to a bout like that due to all the clinching Abril likes to do.

Broner would have to chase Abril around the ring all night, and throw punches while he’s holding onto him with his constant clinches. What kind of fight would that be? I see Broner easily winning it, but it would be ugly because of Abril’s fighting style.
