Image: Rigondeaux vs. Marroquin on September 15th on Chavez Jr-Martinez undercardBy Dan Ambrose: Top Rank has moved to further beef up their September 15th fight card headlined by WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. vs. Sergio Martinez by adding WBA World super bantamweight champion Gullermo Rigondeaux (10-0, 8 KO’s) in a title defense against one of Top Rank’s stable fighters, 2nd tier prospect Robert Marroquin (22-1, 15 KO’s) at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas, Nevada.

This is basically a mismatch, because the 22-year-old Marroquin doesn’t belong in the same ring with Rigondeaux and is probably going to be embarrassed in this fight. I suppose the best that Top Rank can hope for is that Marroquin can at least make Rigondeaux struggle a little bit before he’s ultimately blown out. I don’t see it that way.

However, Marroquin might help draw some fans to the fight if nothing else. It’s the wrong location for the fight, because Marroquin’s fans are in the Texas area where he lives, not in Las Vegas. But some fans in the Texas area might be more inclined to purchase the fight on pay-per-view now that Marroquin’s name has been added.

It’s unfortunate that he’s being thrown to The Jackel, because Marroquin is still little more than a 2nd tier fighter who is trying to find his way. He was beaten last year by Franciso Leal in a 10 round decision in somewhat of a surprise. He’s had soft matchmaking since for him and he’s won his last three fights. However, he’s going to get blown out by Rigondeaux.

Rigondeaux is quickly becoming the biggest name in the super bantamweight division after blowing out Teon Kennedy in his last fight and Rico Ramos in his fight before that. Rigondeaux has been hoping that Top Rank would set him up in a unification bout with one of their cash cows IBF/WBO super bantamweight champion Nonito Donaire, but unfortunately there’s been no move to make that happen.
