Image: Rigondeaux expected to renew contract with Top Rank for two yearsBy Dan Ambrose: WBA World super bantamweight champion Guillermo Rigondeaux (10-0, 8 KO’s) is reportedly in negotiations with Top Rank to renew his contract with them that expired yesterday on July 16th, according to fightnews.com. The 31-year-old Rigondeaux could renew for two more years with Top Rank.

Rigondeaux reportedly also has been in contract talks with Mayweather Promotions and Golden Boy Promotions. However, it’s looking like he’ll renew with Top Rank. For that to happen you have to imagine that Rigondeaux is being given what he wants in terms of money and possibly promises for big fights if he stays with them. The one fight that Rigondeaux wants is against IBF/WBO super bantamweight champion Nonito Donaire, but he’s had zero luck in getting the fight despite him and Donaire both being with Top Rank.

It’s unclear if Rigondeaux will get a fight against Donaire even if he resigns with Top Rank. After all, Donaire has a say so in this too, and he’s shown little interest in facing Rigondeaux. Recently, Donaire said he prefers to fight Abner Mares rather than Rigondeaux. As such, it might not help Rigondeaux get the fight with Donaire even if he stays with Top Rank. However, if Rigondeaux leaves Top Rank, then it’s probably safe to say he’ll never get the chance to fight Donaire because it’ll be a lot easier to say no to the fight with Rigondeaux with a different promoter. I don’t see it happening, because is looking too good right now, and a lot better than Donaire, who struggled to defeat South African Jeffrey Mathebula recently.

Rigondeaux may need to try and get fights against other guys like Anselmo Moreno or maybe Mares, if Golden Boy Promotions will allow their fighter to face Rigondeaux. I don’t see that happening as long as Rigondeaux is with Top Rank.
