Image: Plaudits for Danny GarciaBy Gari Jones: Amir Khan W26, O18, L3, D0 suffered a second straight defeat on Saturday the 15th July at the hand of Danny Garcia W25, KO15, L0, D0 . Though Lamont Peterson tested positive for a banned substance and I do believe Khan had a case against some unfair scoring from the referee, Garcia won this fight in true style and here’s WHY.

Garcia knew that when it came to speed Khan would win hands down. Speaking of Khans speed is it just me or does he have a natural fast forward built in to him, Jesus Christ he gets faster with every fight, it’s almost lighting at times. Garcia knew he couldn’t out speed Khan so he let him trade first. He covered up extremely well and once he felt the punches hit his gloves he would counter Khan, and while Amir defended and regrouped he would try for the body.

Now Khan for the first two rounds landed some tasty combo’s and really outworked his tough hitting opponent, what I found impressive on Garcia was his uncanny ability to read the threat of Amir before it came. Now Garcia’s camp obviously knew Khan’s style, they prepared very well I thought. The countering in Garcia caught my eye, he didn’t jab much or lead the fight and it was Khan throwing first. He knew sooner or later he’d counter Khan on his suspect chin that’s why all his punching was aimed to the head.

I think people missed this observation, or made it and didn’t point it out. Garcia’s shots at least landed ½ or maybe 3/5 of their potential to a guarded Khan Garcia which was wearing down Amir very quickly this way. And that was what I could see. At the end of round 2 Garcia had a cut to his right eye and some swelling form the left, Khan won the round but Garcia was just warming up now.

Round 3: This was interesting not for the fact Amir was knocked down but for the first 90 seconds of it. Amir controlled and dominated it his speed is in something to be admired. Garcia though changed tactics, it was body shots he went for and that are where t turned for me I feel. One body shot was a little low in that round but not illegal or anything, but Khan was feeling those shots.

30 seconds to go of round 3 and the counter punching plan worked brilliantly. Garcia watched Khan bouncing, gearing up for an assault. Khan goes in and then he leans left and throws that huge left that knocks Khan down, Khan’s neck takes most of the impact but its enough to knock him down (shows Garcia’s power). For the final few seconds Garcia smelt blood and hurt Khan with a barrage of punches. End of round 3 Khan is absolutely wobbling like a drunk man.

Round 4 not much to speak of, Game plan worked a treat. Khan was hit by a straight right, he was confused and dazed still from the left hook in round 3, the ref counted and Khan was allowed to continue. A glancing left in the final minute knocked Khan down again and the ref waved game over.

Speed may have been on Khan’s side but the fast thinking was on Garcia’s side, he utilised a very clever strategy. The plan may have been a simple one, but it was very effective. I’ve seen many big punchers against Khan, but Garcia is the first one I’ve seen who applied some strategy and intelligence to his work ethic. It worked brilliantly and I think that people need to acknowledge that. Khan got beat truly for the first time (no excuses here) Garcia might want to book a fight with Mayweather himself he would trouble the Money Maker I feel.

In closing WELL DONE GARCIA GREAT WIN
