Image: Escobedo gets emotional after loss to Broner, says he didn't get a fair fightBy Dan Ambrose: Vincente Escobedo (26-4, 15 KO’s) was almost in tears after losing to former WBO super featherweight champion Adrien Broner (24-0, 20 KO’s) by a 5th round TKO last Saturday night at the U.S Bank in Cincinnati, Ohio. Escobedo had to face a bigger sized Broner, who failed to make weight on Friday for the fight, and also came in over the 140 pound rehydration weigh-in on the day of the fight.

Escobedo, a pure boxer, never really stood a chance against the bigger, faster and the stronger Broner. In the 5th, Escobedo’s nose may have been broken, as it started bleeding and blood poured out of it. Broner unloaded on the bleeding Escobedo with power shots one after another while Escobedo tried to fight off the ropes. Escobedo’s trainer finally had seen enough and he waived the towel to the referee to signal for the fight to be stopped.

After the bout, Escobedo got emotional while being interviewed by Max Kellerman of HBO, saying “He was much faster, he was much quicker and he had some power…Did he feel heavier? Yeah, he felt stronger. I came in at my weight like a professional and Adrien didn’t do his part. I was away from my family and my wife just to come here and not get a fair shake. I get really emotional as you can see. I’m here to fight.”

In fairness to Broner, he would have probably have still won the fight even if he had made the 130 pound weight limit. The fact of the matter is he’s just faster and stronger than Escobedo. Nothing likely would change even if Broner made the weight for the fight. Escobedo was paid extra for Broner failing to make the weight-in for the fight and then failing at meeting the contractually agreed 140 pound weight limit on the day of the fight.

Broner weighed in at 143.5 for that weigh-in. However, for the actual fight, Broner came in at 147 lbs and Escobedo weighed 142 lbs. There wasn’t a huge difference in the weight between the two fighters. The difference was the speed and power of Broner. Escobedo is a boxer, and he was always going to have problems against Broner due to his lack of power.
