By William Mackay: Heavyweight Tyson Fury (17-0, 12 KO’s) has unknowingly put a great deal of pressure on himself by picking out an easy mark in 40-year-old part-time fighter Martin Rogan (14-2, 7 KO’s) to fight on April 14th instead of taking on an actual world class contender at the Odyssey Arena in Belfast, Northern, Ireland.
Fury, 23, could have faced pretty much anyone he wanted to in the top tier of the division, but instead rejected a mouth watering fight against unbeaten heavyweight prospect David Price to face a ring rusty Rogan, who hasn’t fought in over a year half. The last time Rogan fought was in November 2010, and he hasn’t fought a quality heavyweight in three years.
That’s kind of hard to believe because why would Fury face a guy that hasn’t fought anyone good in that time frame but that’s what the deal is. Rogan lost two fights against Sam Sexton in 2009, and since then he took it easy with a couple of wins over 3rd tier opposition in wins over guys that few boxing fans have heard of. Rogan has done nothing since then until getting the call for a fight against Fury.
What this means is that Fury is putting himself into a situation where he not only needs to win but he’s go to do it in an impressive fashion due to how old and rusty Rogan is. Even if Fury beats him, he’s not going to get any credit because of how old Rogan is. Rogan will be turning 41 a month after the fight. What is Fury doing fighting old guys? Shouldn’t he have stepped it up? Fury seemed to be moving forward with his fights against Dereck Chisora and Neven Pajkic in 2011, but then you get this. It’s almost as if Fury is afraid to fail so he’s going to go back to fighting weak opposition to keep from losing.
