Anderson must make Groves taste his power early and often

Image: Anderson must make Groves taste his power early and oftenBy Scott Gilfoid: Since British super middleweight champion George Groves (14-0, 11 KO’s) has decided to face Kenny Anderson (15-1, 11 KO’s) in a rematch on March 16th, Anderson has to make sure he avenges his defeat from November 2010 by changing his game plan completely and really going after Anderson this time instead of treating him with kids gloves.

We saw what happened last time Anderson played it nice against Groves; he got knocked out in the 6th round in a very winnable fight. In analyzing that fight under a microscope, I couldn’t help but notice that Anderson fought in a kind of lackadaisical manner after dropping Groves in the 3rd round.

It’s good that Anderson learned his lesson because he’ll come back on March 16th with renewed energy to get vengeance for his loss. The key here is for Anderson to make Groves drunk with his power by tagging him with every opportunity.

The keys to victory:

* Go after Groves at a double time to make sure he can’t run around the ring like usually does against punchers.

* Ignore Groves’ feints by really going after him nonstop.

* Hit Groves as hard as possible with every shot.

* Make Groves taste the glove when he tries to grab. No time outs for Groves.

If you look at Groves fights against Anderson, Paul Smith and James DeGale, you’ll notice that he looks really weak when his opponent takes the fight to him and punishes him combinations in heavy assaults. The only time Groves has his moments is when his opposition stops punching and lets him take charge of the situation. He then picks them off with one or two shots at a time while circling the ring and using a lo of feints. I don’t know why his opponents weren’t clever enough to go right at him to punish him the way that DeGale was in their fight last May. That’s how you beat a guy like Groves.
