Roach thinks Pacquiao should retire after Mayweather fight, says he might retire too
By Jason Kim: Manny Pacquiao’s trainer Freddie Roach says that he think that Pacquiao should get out of boxing and retire after a possible fight against Floyd Mayweather Jr. next. Roach seems to be overlooking completely the threat that Pacquiao has in front of him with a fight against Joshua Clottey bearing down on the Filipino fighter on March 13th. But Roach must be feeling pretty confident about Pacquiao’s chances in that fight for him to look ahead the way he is for a fight against Mayweather.
A fight between Mayweather and Pacquiao would give not only both Pacquiao and Mayweather a huge million dollar payday, but Roach would get a nice payday as well. He might not need to train anymore fighters if he doesn’t want to after a mega fight like Mayweather-Pacquiao. However, it’s unclear whether Pacquiao or his promoter Bob Arum of Top Rank feel the same way that Roach does about the retirement talk. Pacquiao still has a number of big money opponents in front of him besides just Mayweather.
There’s not a lot of them, but there’s more than a few starting with Edwin Valero, a rematch with Miguel Cotto if he wins the WBA light middleweight title over Yuri Foreman in June [this would give Pacquiao a chance to win his 8th world title, something he has talked about wanting], a fight against Amir Khan, Saul Alvarez, Timothy Bradley, Devon Alexander or even Paul Williams.
Provided that Pacquiao continues to age well and fight often, there’s no reason to believe that he shouldn’t be able to squeeze in another six or seven fights before he hangs up the gloves. If I’m Pacquiao, I wouldn’t be listening to what Roach is saying about retirement. Pacquiao needs to listen to his body, and if he feels that he’s slowing down as a fighter, only then should he consider hanging up the gloves.
But right now, Pacquiao is dominating and isn’t showing any signs of going downhill as a fighter. If anything, Pacquiao appears to be getting better still. He seems to be one of those Bernard Hopkins type fighters that gets better with age rather than declines. He could have another four to six good years left him if he wants to.
At the very least, Pacquiao can dominate for another few years if he wants to. Pacquiao needs to go after the easy fights after he fights Mayweather. Valero, Cotto, and Khan would be the ideal fights for Pacquiao to take in that order. None of those fighters will last long against Pacquiao, and he’d be able to win those fights without taking a lot of wear and tear in the process.
I expect Mayweather to get by Shane Mosley in May, which is why I didn’t include Mosley on the list of fighters that Pacquiao should fight. However, if Mosley does beat Mayweather, then he is the next guy that Pacquiao should be going after and not Mayweather.
As far as Roach does with his retirement talk, if he wants to retire then by all means he can do that. But he needs to let Pacquiao be and not be trying to have him follow his own personal vision for him.

@Eddie, are you feeling right now that you would like to take your post back, erase it and try again?
I know Joshua Clottey from when I was fighting. We trained in the old Gym back when. And I know even then, Joshua was a work horse and took a backdoor to no one. Roach should not look past Joshua because I think it’s a mistake. We all know they picked Joshua because they think it’s not going to be that hard. They have a big surprise coming in a few days.
@tell it like it is, look I am all for making sure the sport is clean. No one should be allowed to cheat. But I think that what Pac agreed to was more than enough. I think that unlimited urine and the 3 blood tests with the 24 day cut off incluidng one test right after the fight was way more than what hte commission required and was enough to ensure no cheating while still not having the testing procedures itself interfere with the athletes during heavy training.
I think the solution is not to mandate blood testing but rather to use the new advanced NON INVASIVE drug testing methods that are currently available. There are non invasive tests avaiable right now that will render blood testing obsolete. Urine, hair and saliva will do it and I really cannot see Manny making excuses not to take THOSE tests. IF he did I would be the first to say that he has something to hide. But, if Floyd STILL insists on blood testing when it can be shown that non invasive methods will do the same thing, then we will all know that his demands for unlimited blood testing were never about “cleaning up the sport” but rather about either harrassment to Pac and to disrupt his training or as an excuse to get out of hte fight. IF we use non invasive testing, we will quickly find out which fighter has been lying.
@Wowzabean,
2 lbs is a lot (especially if you don’t have it to spare). If he spent the last few days trying to lose the extra weight, it would have drained him for the fight (I still think Cotto did well against Pac and the weight wouldn’t have made much of a difference, but perhaps Cotto wouldn’t have been stopped).
When these fighters lose weight to make weight, many of them are eating ice cubes for days at a time (that’s what Vargas used to do). This makes you weak and irritable, and has adverse affects on your body if you have to go 12 grueling rounds.
What happens to Khan and Benavidez if Roach retires
pac should retire BEFORE the mayweather fight so he dont get exposed…that way he keeps all of paper titles intact and pactards will be happy …pac better just stick to fighting low teir or washed up fighters !!
@Common, with all of the fighters now coming forward and saying that the current testng rules are a joke, and a caveman could pass them, I have a hard time respecting them. The sport is a dirty sleazy sport that has been glamorized by HBO. It needs to be cleaned up.
The commission will not do anything until a boxer dies in the ring due to substance abuse, then they will be liable for a lawsuit. Follow the money…They don’t have the money to do the testing, nor do they want to give up the rights to a new agency. The current testing procedures are a serious joke! Some congressman needs to step in…
What kind of a message is Freddie sending to his OTHER FIGHTERS.
hmmm… if roach retires where will it leave his prospects jose benavidez, amir khan and vanes martisoyan and other guys like sturm?? amir khan would need 120 % of roach if he were to beat bradley or alexander
Drained Cotto by 2 lbs? Are you f*ckn retarded. You think if Cotto had 2 more pounds he would have won the fight? You can think Pacquiao is a “bunch of garbage” it’s your opinion. We all know your opinion doesn’t mean d!ck when the BWAA, Ring Magazine and ESPN says otherwise.
@wowzabean
You say Clottey is a Welterweight. Which he is and Cotto was a welterweight as well. Your boi pacman drained Cotto at welterweight and lets Clottey Fights at 147. That dont make since to me. He drained Cotto because he know Cotto was a better fighter than Clottey. I think Pacman is a bunch of garbage and a product of hype. If he is a true WW he should fight all his fights at 147. If he isn’t, he should go back to 140 and fight Bradley, Alexander, and Valero, all of which i think would give him a great challenge with Valero or Bradley possible beating him..So, please stop talking about Paul Williams is to big because if he can make “147″ and wants to fight at 147 let him fight at that weight and not 144.
@tell it like it is, personally I think Pac beats 2-5 on your list. As for #1 on your list, Mayweather, as we all know, half the people think Mayweather and the other half think Pac. That is why they were going to cut up $90M between them. If you are a Pac fan, you will say that Floyd scuttled the fight with over the top demands on drug testing. Unlimited urine testing and 3 blood tests were still not enough for him. Why couldn’t he just abide by the rules of the body governing the fight and give us fans what we want to see?
If you are a Floyd fan you say it is Pac’s fault. He agreed to the random urine and the 3 blood tests. So what’s a few more blood tests for $45M? He is the one who is being unreasonbla.
As for me, I just want to see the fight.
PWILL needs to be consistant if he wants a shot at the top guys! I understand his physical advantages but he has a lot of flaws in his game. PLUS he doesn’t have a big enough following and doesn’t bring enough money to the table for a top guy to take a risk on! Sorry PWILL…I would love for my dude MAYWEATHER to beat you, same goes for Mosely and Pac but you got give them a big reason to take your challenge.
Pac Man and Roach will retire after the Money May fight if they do actually fight.
Pac Man will retire do to the massive butt kicking that Money May puts on him. Roach will have to retire also because he will be tramautized after witnessing such a bad beating…..
This is of course contingient on if Pac Man isn’t allowed to use his “magic potions” and has to actually be normal for the bout…
looks to me like people can’t deny that they are dying for more pacquiao fights… who’s to say his next fight will lose to the chicken fight at this point..
Dont be greedy let the fighter rest he deserves it.
Money in the WW division. Good point. I don’t see Floyd fighting Pwill though, or Manny. Pwill would have to mop the floor with some of the top 10 WWs, and garner a name for himself. When all the attention starts going to him as a contender, Floyd and Manny will be forced into a situation to fight him, assuming they’re both still around in that time. The punisher would have to get in the ring w/Cotto, Clottey, Berto, Margacheato or even Collazo. Beat two of these guys convincingly and you get a shot at the top 2. But, trust me, nobody will fight him. Maybe Clottey as he’ll make a name for himself in his next fight if he gives Pac a hard time.
I agree, Paul Williams is a giant. The money is in the Welterweight Division right now. If it were me, I would shed the lbs and reside there. Paul could rule the WW division with his biggest fight being Floyd Mayweather.
Floyd will make $50 Million fighting Pacquiao, then he will make an additional $50 Million to fight Paul Williams as his last fight with his (0) in tact.
Williams won’t be a problem because he will have to drain himself to come down to 147. He will still clean house with all others.
maybe pacquiao will retire IF he becomes a congressman.
Roach retiring? Unlikely. Freddie craves the smell of his sweaty Wild Card Gym! hehehe!
tell it like it is,
Let’s face it very few people outside the boxing community know Bradley. He’s starting to gain popularity, but after the whole Haiti situation a lot more people are aware of Andre Berto now, and a lot of people will be cheering for him. I bought one of his shirts too. Bradley is the best at 140lb right now, but w/no big name willing to fight him, he doesn’t deserve to be in the ring w/Pac. High risk, low reward. Same could be argued for Clottey, but that’s another story, he’s a full WW.
I don’t know why people keep saying Pwill. Dude is a giant, why the f*ck does he want to fight WWs, move up man.
My last post got jumbled. The last two paragraphs should be switched.
@ Dopey,
I got my tickets…
@Tell it like it is
I have liked Berto a lot since he burst onto the scene and I really thought he was the real deal. But, seeing how he struggled against Collazo and wasn’t able to really affect Urango, I have some doubts. I think he needs a little more seasoning before taking on Pac.
Also, the same goes for Paul Williams. I thought he was the real deal also (because of his height and stance, but most importantly because he throws nearly 100 punches per round), but he was exposed by Quintana and Martinez. Also, I’m from DC (where Williams trains) and I know some of the people who Williams trains with – there is talk among the inner circle that he is gearing up for a fight with Floyd later this year or early next year…
He gets hit a little too much (and has been knocked down and rocked), and he is a little sloppy. I am picking Berto against Mosley, but I have reservations about fighting Pac at this point.
I think Pac should just let go facing KFC – just to mess with KFC’s mind. KFC may claim that Pac is afraid of him, and that’s fine. That will leave out KFC needing to prove himself but couldn’t. That would be really frustrating for KFC. Not to mention the prospect of huge payday for KFC – that will definitely make him cry over spilled milk that never was.
unfortunately i agree with roach!pacquiao has already proven himself!a three quarter billion pesos rich in his country, dozens of endorsement, well love by his countrymen and a great person too!he don’t need to fight floyd!he’s truly one of the greatest boxer of our time!
williams aint most avoided fighter that skinny dude wants the lions share of any purse just ask clottey ,he offered him 200.ooo grand when clottey earned quadruple that fighting cotto no wonder guys dont want to fight him that big beanpole aint even ppv i thought martinez whooped his ass as did many others.that big dude just throws punches from the elbow and he,s vastly overated. floyd pacman mosley would all beat him
if he beats mayweather and hands him his 1st defeat then he should retire on a high because he won’t achieve anything better then that for the rest of his career
@Common, if Pacquioa could beat just 1 of this five, I would say he is good. I think he would come up short on all. Berto would be his best shot at a (W). Yet still unlikely.
1) Mayweather
2) Mosely
3) Bradley
4) Williams
5) Berto
@Wowzabean, Bradley deserves a shot at Pacquiao before Berto. He would be a bigger PPV draw. It makes the most sense monetarily. I honestly think it would be a 12 round split decision.
Not sure of the winner. A close one.
dopey;
You have shown you fit your screen name. Mayweather-Mosley tickets go on sale tomorrow. Of course no one has bought any yet, because they’re not on sale yet! And I guarantee May 1 gets more PPV buys than ANYTHING Pacquiao has ever been involved in. Against ODLH, May got 2.44 million, Pacquiao barely got half that amount. Say what you want, but if you look at the numbers its clear Mayweather is the biggest draw in boxing. No one else is even close.
You think Manny is popular now? IF he truly wants to go down as the greatest of all time, he needs to beat Floyd, Shane and, as the grand finale, P. Williams at ww. Then they be giving him testing to make sure he was not from another planet.
Leonard beat Hearns at ww with the same physical mismatch. Now THAT would be a challenge for either Floyd, Shane or Manny. Too bad we will never see it. Too bad for Paul too because he could make 8 figures for that fight.
They established boxing records that would be very hard to duplicate, Roach with four trainer of the year and Pacquiao with championships in seven weight division the only one to ever achieved that yes, its time to retire even sans the mayweather fight.
Id like Pacman to fight on after Floyd (providing he wins)and take on Berto to Unfi the division and retire hold 3 major titles.
I think he’ll beat Clottey in a good fight and then take on Floyd in a very close fight which I feel he will lose on points. I hope he doesnt though!
Go Pacman
anyone knows mayweather vs mosley ticket sales? if they can beat pacquiao vs clottey ticket sales. I dont think nobody buying tickets for floyd vs mosley. LOL
Mosley is more of a threat to Mayweather, if Floyd wins on May 1st he would also ‘whip his punk ass’ in a fight with Pacquiao.
Roach cares for Pacy. He takes care good care of him. I COMPLETELY agree with Roach. Mabey a few but they don’t need. Mayweather needs to be humbled put in check and dethroned frm his fake status of pound for pound king. Manny Pacquiao is the Pound for Pound King.
is this the Paul Williams that was in trouble in round one against an average puncher like Sergio Martinez and had to fight like hell to eke out a decision. Williams isnt as daunting as he was. Id make Paquaio even money against him.
tell it like it is,
I forgot Berto, Berto deserves a fight w/Pacquiao if he gets a couple top guys in him.
Mayweather
Mosley (if he wins)
Berto
That’s it. 2 fights left at MOST.
There are plenty fights left? After Mayweather there’s nobody. He’s made his money, no need to take more punishment, plus he has other interests aside from boxing. A fight w/Cotto is arguable at best, and Valero needs at least a year fighting top contenders at a higher weight class before he even speaks Manny’s name. Bradley has fought nobody, and Paul Williams needs to man up to full MW or cruiser if he wants to make money.
Pacquiao should part ways with Arum and Roach. I whole heartedly believe that Roach is pushing Pacquiao in to a fight with Mayweather for the payday. Roach does want to retire from the sweaty gyms in his condition. However; Pacquiao will face his own destruction by facing Mayweather. It will be a Marquez repeat after round 4.
Pacquioa must face the following beore retirement:
1) Mayweather
2) Mosely
3) Bradley
4) Berto – (Haitian but I will include him)
5) Williams
Please, and I say please! Pacquiao, you need to face some African Americans to cement your legacy! Run through them the same as you did the Mexicans and I will Crown you myself!
If he beat clottey n Floyd.. I think that’s it 2.. He can retire n relax… As 4 Paul… No one in 147 want a piece of him.. He’s 2 big n 2 good on that wieght.. PAC,Floyd, berto, n Shane is scared of him.. Paul should move up wieght
If pacman fought and beat mayweather then there would be nothing left for him to achieve in this sport.
140 – 147lb is pacmans natural weight, trying to move up more and more would be a waste of time, although i do not doubt he could continue to move up in weight, beating cherry picked champions to gain more and more world titles. But whats the point.
The fight with mayweather would give pac a 20 million dollar pay cheque. That is enough to fund an easy life for pacman and his family. No doubt he can use his popularity to make more money without having to risk his health.
Look at muhamed ali and freddie roach, and all the rest of the punch drunk ex fighters. Its just not worth the risk.
Having said all this i do not believe for one second that pacman will get past mayweather, asuming mayweather gets past mosley.
To all boxing fans, just enjoy the boxing while it’s still a HOT ISSUE regardless of who are you idolizing. Because a boxer like Pacman comes only once in a blue moon. He is truly a phenom.
Cheers! DOn’t forget to watch Pacman-Clottey on March 13th!
this writer is a joke, what he is trying to say is paquiao should listen to him not to freddie roach hahaha.
Freddie Roach retire? Poor Khan!
Mosley, like Williams, would have too much for Pacquiao! His best bet would be to fight Mayweather, as his lack of power gives him at least some chance.
It looks like Pacquiao will face Shane Mosley (hopefully), when Mosley knocks Mayweather out, there’s a big chance that one of the greatest fights of all time will come to fruition.
Mosley will beat the cap of Fraud MayFeathers!
I think that’s fair comment by Roach. No point Pacquiao hanging aroud with what he has achieved.
Paul Williams should just do his thing in middle weight and junior middle weight cause no ones gonna fight him at 147 unless the fans really push for it.
Does Roach say all these things or do these imbecile writer’s just make up so many things just to get a story
I agree with Charlie, no one wants a part of Paul Williams at 147
Take Paul Williams name out of that list of possible fights and Pacquiaos in good shape.
