Guerrero vs. Aydin: A step too far for Robert?

Image: Guerrero vs. Aydin: A step too far for Robert?By Dan Ambrose: Former two division world champion Robert Guerrero (29-1, 18 KO’s) will be climbing two divisions to take on the hard hitting unbeaten Selcuk Aydin (23-0, 17 KO’s) on July 28th for the interim interim WBC welterweight title at the HP Pavilion, in San Jose, California.

Guerrero injured his left shoulder badly last Summer while training for a fight against Marcos Maidana. The shoulder injury required that Guerrero go under the knife, and he’s since recovered from the injury. However, his fight against Aydin will be his first fight back, and he’ll be moving up in weight two divisions in taking the fight. It doesn’t sound like a wise move on Guerrero’s part to be taking a tough opponent like Aydin without one tune-up fight at the new weight class to see how Guerrero would do at the new weight. By jumping straight in after a bad injury like that suggests Guerrero is supremely confident about his skills.

Guerrero last fought in April of last year, beating Michael Katsidis by an easy 12 round unanimous decision. It was easy, but Guerrero had problems when Katsidis was punching to the body. Guerrero looked almost as uncomfortable as he was when he was beaten by Orlando Salido in 2006.

Aydin is a bigger puncher than Katsidis, and capable of giving Guerrero a lot of problems. Aydin doesn’t typically throw a lot of body shots, but he can throw with excellent power when in close. Aydin mostly prefers to go for the head, and he’s pretty lethal. He reminds me of a welterweight version of Marcos Maidana. In some ways, Aydin is more fierce than Maidana because he loads up with everything he throws and he fights with a lot of emotion. He’s hard to box because he tends to force his opponents into a war with him whether they want to or not. I’m sure Guerrero is plenty tough, but I’m not so certain that this is a good time for him to be fighting a war with a guy as powerful as Aydin in a new division.
