Burns says he’s made adjustments for Crawford fight

burns5By Scott Gilfoid: WBO lightweight champion Ricky Burns (36-2-1, 11 KO’s) barely held onto his title in his last fight against challenger Raymundo Beltran. The judges scored the fight a 12 round draw, but boxing fans think Burns lost that fight by a clear decision.

Whatever the case, Burns will now be defending his title in less than 2 months against the talented undefeated American Terence Crawford (22-0, 16 KO’s) on March 1st at the Scottish Exhibition Centre, Glasgow, Scotland, United Kingdom. Burns has been bragging lately about having some new secret strategy that they’re going to use on Crawford to try and beat him. I can only imagine what that strategy is.

Burns vs. Crawford: Fears Unfounded?

burns453By Olly Campbell: I am a boxing fan first and a British boxing fan second. That means I admire ANY fighter with the necessary skills and ring craft to take on all comers, yet if that fighter just so happens to be British, I get behind and root for them just that little bit more.

On March 1st in Glasgow, Scotland, that is exactly what I shall do when Ricky Burns (36- 2-1, 11KOs) faces unbeaten American Terence Crawford (22-0, 16KOs). That, however, hasn’t ALWAYS been the case as far as Burns is concerned. It is only through the latter part of his career that he really began to impress me, the majority of his wins something of a pleasant surprise.

Ricky Burns to fight Terence Crawford on March 1st in Glasgow, Scotland

burns7575By Scott Gilfoid: WBO lightweight champion Ricky Burns (36-2-1, 11 KO’s) will be defending his title for the fifth and likely the last time when he faces #1 WBO Terence Crawford (22-0, 16 KO’s) on March 1st at the Scottish Exhibition Centre, in Glasgow, Scotland, United Kingdom. This is absolutely not the fight that Burns or his promoter Eddie Hearn wanted to take. They were hoping that Burns could fight a rematch against Raymundo Beltran, who Burns was given a 12 round draw against last September in Glasgow.

The World Boxing Organization had other ideas, and instead ordered Burns to take the arguably much tougher fight against the unbeaten lightning fast defensive artist Crawford. What this means of course is that unless we get some wild scoring of the fight like in Burns’ last fight in Glasgow, Burns is going to end up losing this fight to Crawford.

Burns: The bones in my jaw are knitting together nicely

burns754By Scott Gilfoid: WBO lightweight champion Ricky Burns (36-2-1, 11 KO’s) is optimistic that his broken jaw will be healed enough for him to defend his title in February against his #1 WBO Terence Crawford (22-0, 16 KO’s) to willful his WBO ordered title defense against the crafty American.

However, with the way that Burns is talking, we could see him not being ready to defend his WBO strap at that time. How long it would take for his jaw to be ready is anyone’s guess.

“When I was in to see the surgeon last week, we got an X-ray and they’re happy the way the bone’s healing,” Burns said to Sky Sports. “The bone’s knitting together nice. They still can’t tell what it’s going to be like, obviously when it starts taking punches again when I start back sparring.”

Ricky Burn still having jaw problems, Crawford fight may not happen in February

burns7575By Scott Gilfoid: WBO lightweight champion Ricky Burns (36-2-1, 11 KO’s) is experiencing numbness in his recently healed broken jaw, and this could get in the way of his title defense against #1 WBO Terence Crawford on February 8th in Glasgow. Burns suffered a broken jaw last September in his controversial 12 round draw against Raymundo Beltran.

Burns says he thinks his jaw was broken as early as the 2nd round, and instead of quitting to limit the damage to his jaw, he continued to fight for the full 12 rounds and received a very, very controversial draw. It looked like Burns won one round of the fight, but the judges still give him a draw. The fight took place in Burns’ home city of Glasgow, Scotland.

Hearn reaches agreement with Top Rank for Burns vs. Crawford fight in February

burns5By Scott Gilfoid: Matchroom Sport promoter Eddie Hearn has reportedly reached agreement with Top Rank, the promoter for #1 WBO Tererence Crawford (22-0, 16 KO’s), for Match between Crawford ans Hearn’s fighter WBO lightweight champion Ricky Burns (36-2-1, 11 KO’s) for next year in February in Glasgow, Scotland, the home city of Burns. This is where Burns recently was given A gift draw in his fight against challenger Raymundo Beltran last September.

The interesting thing about that fight was that Beltran totally dominated the fight from the 2nd round on and appeared to win 11 of the 12 rounds of the fight, yet the three judges scored the fight a draw. Now it’s Crawford’s turn to travel over to Scotland and try his hand at unseating Burns in his own hometown.

WBO orders Ricky Burns vs. Terence Crawford negotiations

burns43333By SCott Gilfoid: Well, it looks like WBO lightweight champion Ricky Burns (36-2-1, 11 KO’s) can forget about fighting Raymundo Beltran in an immediate rematch unless his promoter can talk the WBO into letting him bypass his #1 WBO challenger Terence Crawford (22-0, 16 KO’s), as the WBO has reportedly ordered negotiations to take place between Burns and Crawford’s promoters, says Fightnews.com.

They have 30 days to reach an agreement before it goes to purse bids. If you’re Eddie Hearn of Matchroom Sport, this probably has to be interpreted as really bad news because Crawford is a nightmare opponent for Burns. Heck, he’s a nightmarish opponent for anyone in the 135 lb. division, and doesn’t that the fight will probably be stage in Glasgow, Scotland, the home city of Burns.

Burns open to facing Beltran or Crawford in early 2014

burns7575By Scott Gilfoid: WBO lightweight champion Ricky Burns (36-2-1, 11 KO’s) is still recovering from the broken jaw he suffered in his 12 round draw against Raymundo Beltran last month in Glasgow, Scotland.

Burns says he thinks his jaw will be healed by February of next year, and he’s okay with fighting Beltran again in a rematch or his mandatory challenger Terrence Crawford. It’ll be up to his promoter Eddie Hearn of Matchroom Sport whether he faces either of those guys for his next bout.

There’s a possibility that Burns’ jaw still won’t be fully healed even by February because that’s only 5 months and that’s a not a long time for someone with a serious jaw injury. It’s quite possible that Burns might not be ready to fight until further along in the year.
