Ricky Burns is really up against it in Terence Crawford bout on March 1st

By Scott Gilfoid: We could be saying goodbye permanently to Ricky Burns (36-2-1, 11 KO’s) as any kind of champion when he puts his WBO lightweight strap on the line next month on March 1st against #1 WBO Terence Crawford (22-, 16 KO’s) at the Scottish Exhibition Centre, Glasgow, Scotland, United Kingdom.

I’m sure Burns and his promoter Eddie Hearn of Matchroom Sport wished that he didn’t have to face a talent like Crawford right about now, because Burns has looked so God awful as of late in his fights with Raymundo Beltran and Jose Gonzalez. But Hearn and Burns had no choice but to take the fight with the talented Crawford after the World Boxing Organization ordered the match.

I’m sure that Hearn would have much preferred to put Burns back in with Beltran in a rematch in Scotland, because at least Burns would have had a decent – but not good – chance of beating Beltran. I mean, the difference in talent between Beltran and Crawford is huge. There’s a million miles between them that separates the two fighters, and that’s not me taking a shot at Beltran. I think he’s a very good fighter, but Crawford is in the next world in terms of talent. To me, Crawford is another Floyd Mayweather Jr. in the making. He just needs a little work on being busier with his offense, and he’s there.

I honestly don’t see what Burns can do to beat Crawford next month. Unless we get another set of screwball scores like we saw in the Burns-Beltran fight, then Burns has no chance of beating Crawford. Without some more mickey mouse scores in Glasgow, we’re going to see Burns take a beating and end up getting clowned awfully badly. I just hope that for his sake he puts his foot to the floor and goes out on his shield. I’d hate to see Burns give a half effort if he gets some kind of injury. It was bad watching Burns run and hold for the last 10 rounds last year in September in his hugely controversial 12 round draw against Beltran in Glasgow, Scotland.

I had Burns winning all of 1 round and losing the last 11 rounds, but then again, I had eyes open during the fight. But if Burns gets nicked up and starts running and holding again, I just hope the judges get things right this time, because they’ll only make Burns look bad if they give him another controversial draw or victory. I felt that Burns deserved to lose his fight with Michael Katsidis back in 2011 in a fight that took place in London. Burns held, covered up and ran for 12 rounds while Katsidis nailed him with combinations. The scoring was so terrible in that fight, because you could see clearly that Katisids deserved the victory because of the countless power shots he had hit the defensive Burns with. I mean, if one guy is just covering up taking shots, who do you expect to win the fight – the guy covering up or the guy throwing the shots? In this case, Katsidis was throwing all the power shots while Burns was just covering up trying to ride out the storm for 12 rounds.
