Cleverly plans on using Kovalev’s power against him

kovalev22By Scott Gilfoid: WBO light heavyweight champion Nathan Cleverly (26-0, 12 KO’s) says he plans on taking advantage of challenger Sergey Kovalev (21-0, 19 KO’s) to punish him with shots each time the Russian fighter loads up with one of his big power shots in their fight on August 17th at the Motorpoint Arena, Cardiff, Wales, United Kingdom.

Cleverly thinks he can hit Kovalev with shots each time he looks to land a hard punch of his own.

Cleverly said “He’s a massive puncher, but when he loads up for these big punches he’ll leave me openings and then I’ll take this guy apart.”

Cleverly says he’s going toe-to-toe with Kovalev on August 17th

cleverly45(Nathan Cleverly seen here showing beautiful punching form on a rabbit punch) By Scott Gilfoid: It seems like all the soft match-making that’s been done for WBO light heavyweight champion Nathan Cleverly (26-0, 12 KO’s) has really gone to his head because he’s now thinking he can go to war with his next challenger Sergey Kovalev (21-0-1, 19 KO’s) next month in their fight on August 17th at the Motorpoint Arena, Cardiff, Wales, United Kingdom.

Cleverly says he’s going to try and beat the knockout artist Kovalev in his own game by getting in the trenches with him and slugging it out.

Cleverly happy Kovalev will be trying to KO him

cleverly45By Scott Gilfoid: For some reason WBO light heavyweight champion Nathan Cleverly (26-0, 12 KO’s) is actually pleased that his opponent Sergey Kovalev (21-0-1, 19 KO’s) will be trying to knock him out with every shot he throws on August 17th at the Motorpoint Arena, Cardiff, Wales, United Kingdom.

Cleverly seems to believe that he’s going to make the hard hitting Russian miss all night while drilling him with combinations.

Cleverly said “He’ll be looking to take my head clean off and I love that feeling of having adrenalin surging around my body.”

Cleverly’s unbeaten record on the line against Kovalev

kovalev453By Scott Gilfoid: WBO light heavyweight champion Nathan Cleverly (26-0, 12 KO’s) will be facing the big punching Sergey Kovalev (21-0-1, 19 KO’s) next month on August 17th at the Motorpoint Arena in Cardiff, Wales, UK. We could be seeing Cleverly say goodbye to both his unbeaten record and his WBO 175 lb. title on the same night.

Kovalev is definitely a level above some of the truly awful opposition that Cleverly has been consistently matched up against during his 8 year pro career. When you get a fighter that has been matched carefully the way that Cleverly has been, and you put him all of a sudden with someone that can actually fight like Kovalev, bad things can happen.

Hopkins agrees to fight Kovalev

hopkins3444By Sean McDaniel: IBF light heavyweight champion Bernard Hopkins (53-6-2, 32 KO’s) says he’ll be defending his title against mandatory challenger Sergey Kovalev (21-0-1, 19 KO’s) next in the 48-year-old Hopkins’ first defense of his title.

Earlier this week, the International Boxing Federation ordered Hopkins to face the 30-year-old Kovalev next rather than taking an optional title defense.

Hopkins was supposed to be facing mandatory challenger Karo Murat, but he had visa problems and couldn’t travel to the U.S to take the fight.

Kovalev has a chance for Cleverly fight if Hopkins bout doesn’t take place

cleverly45By Scott Gilfoid: Yesterday the IBF ordered a fight between IBF light heavyweight champion Bernard Hopkins and his mandatory challenger unbeaten #4 IBF Sergey Kovalev. They have until July 17th to negotiate a fight, according to Dan Rafael.

If the negotiations aren’t completed by that point in time, then the fight will go to purse bids. It’s unclear whether Hopkins will choose to take this fight.

If he decides to vacate or go the unification route with another champion to avoid the hard hitting Kovalev then we could see Kovalev face WBO light heavyweight champion Nathan Cleverly on August 17th on the Darren Barker vs. Daniel Geale fight card.

IBF orders Bernard Hopkins to face Sergey Kovalev – Breaking news!

hopkins5By Allan Fox: IBF light heavyweight champion Bernard Hopkins (53-6-2, 32 KO’s) got some bad news today from the International Boxing Federation who have ordered the 48-year-old Hopkins to defend his IBF 175 lb. strap against unbeaten #1 IBF Sergey Kovalev (21-0, 19 KO’s) without the possibility of Hopkins slipping in a title defense against another opponent.

Chris Mannix of Sportsillustrated tweeted this moments ago: “IBF has ordered @THEREALBHOP to defend his title against Sergey Kovalev immediately. Negotiations must be complete by July 17, or purse bid. IBF made it clear neither fighter may take another fight. Main Events’s Kathy Duva tells SI she has already sent an email to @GoldenBoyBoxing’s Richard Schaefer to begin negotiations.”

Kovalev stops White; Jennings beats Fedosov

656(Photo credits to Larry Levanti/Main Events) By Jim Dower: Unbeaten #6 WBO light heavyweight contender Sergey Kovalev (21-0-1, 19 KO’s) stayed unbeaten with an impressive 3rd round TKO win over an over-matched Cornelius White (21-2, 16 KO’s) at the Sands Casino Resort, Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, USA.

After dominating the first two rounds, Kovalev knocked White down three times in the 3rd round from big left hands before the fight was halted by the referee.

After the fight, Kovalev said “I want Bernard Hopkins next.”

It’s possible that IBF light heavyweight champion Bernard Hopkins could face Kovalev. Hopkins’ scheduled July 13th opponent Karo Murat has visa problems and won’t be able to travel to the U.S to face Hopkins next month. If Hopkins chooses not to face Kovalev, then we could see Kovalev face WBO light heavyweight champion Nathan Cleverly.

Nathan Cleverly vs. Sergey Kovalev possible for August

cleverly79By Scott Gilfoid: Having had no luck in landing fights against IBF/WBA super middleweight champion Carl Froch and IBF light heavyweight champion Bernard Hopkins, WBO light heavyweight champion Nathan Cleverly (26-0, 12 KO’s) is being mentioned as possibly facing unbeaten Russian talent Sergey Kovalev (20-0-1, 18 KO’s) this August in a fight that will likely be taking place in the UK.

The South Wales Argus is saying that the unbeaten 30-year-old Kovalev, #4 IBF, #5 WBC, #6 WBO, #8 WBA, is the guy that Cleverly will likely be facing. But for Cleverly to face Kovalev in August, Kovalev will have to get through his fight tonight against contender Cornelius White (21-1, 16 KO’s) in one piece in their fight at the Sands Casino Resort, in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, USA.
