Cleverly happy Kovalev will be trying to KO him

cleverly45By Scott Gilfoid: For some reason WBO light heavyweight champion Nathan Cleverly (26-0, 12 KO’s) is actually pleased that his opponent Sergey Kovalev (21-0-1, 19 KO’s) will be trying to knock him out with every shot he throws on August 17th at the Motorpoint Arena, Cardiff, Wales, United Kingdom.

Cleverly seems to believe that he’s going to make the hard hitting Russian miss all night while drilling him with combinations.

Cleverly said “He’ll be looking to take my head clean off and I love that feeling of having adrenalin surging around my body.”

Cleverly’s attitude tells me that he’s had too many years of facing fodder opponents and it’s gone to his head to where he feels like he’s unbeatable. You see this a lot with fighters that have fought a lot of fodder in their careers. Cleverly doesn’t seem to have the sense enough to be scared like he should be.

They get to the point where they think they can walk on water, and it’s so, so sad when they get introduced to reality when they finally face a live body with an active pulse rate. I think that’s what we’re going to have with Cleverly when he gets in the ring with Kovalev next month.

Cleverly will come out fast thinking he’s got another guy like Tommy Karpency or Shawn Hawk and immediately start eating some huge shots that will snap him back to reality. By the time Cleverly realizes what a huge mistake he’s made it’ll be too late for him to turn things around and start running.

Kovalev won’t give Cleverly a moment to breath with his unrelenting pressure, and I see Cleverly hitting the deck fairly early in this one due to him overestimating his own talent. Once Cleverly tasted the canvas, he’s going to get put down again and again until the referee mercifully stops the contest.

I can definitely see Cleverly getting taken out as fast as David Price did last Saturday night in his loss to Tony Thompson, but I don’t see it being because of stamina. Cleverly will get stopped due to Kovalev’s big power shots.
