Stevenson conquers Bika, is Kovalev next?

stevenson2By Allan Fox: Making his 5th defense of his World Boxing Council 175 pound title, Adonis Stevenson (26-1, 21 KOs) was victorious in defeating former WBC 168 pound champion Sakio Bika (32-7-3, 21 KOs) by a unanimous 12 round decision on Saturday afternoon at the Pepsi Coliseum, Quebec City, Quebec, Canada.

Stevenson, 37, unloaded everything but the kitchen sink in the fight in vying to become the first fighter to ever stop the 35-year-old Bika, but it wasn’t meant to be. Bika visited the canvas twice in the fight. He took Stevenson’s best shots and kept coming forward with a determined look on his face.

Beterbiev wants Kovalev fight, not worried about Campillo fight

press conference-0003 - Artur Beterbiev(Credit: Amanda Kwok / PBC on CBS) By Allan Fox: This Saturday night unbeaten #11 WBA light heavyweight champion Artur Beterbiev (7-0, 7 KOs) will be fighting 36-year-old former WBA cruiserweight champion Gabriel Campillo (25-6-1, 12 KOs) in a 12 round bout on the undercard of the Adonis Stevenson vs. Sakio Bika fight at the Pepsi Coliseum, Quebec City, Quebec, Canada.

Beterbiev isn’t worried at all about the Campillo fight. He sees it as a bout that he’ll definitely win. The bout that he wants is against IBF/WBA/WBO light heavyweight champion Sergey Kovalev.

WBC orders negotiations between Adonis Stevenson and Sergey Kovalev

kovalev3454By Dan Ambrose: Earlier on Thursday the World Boxing Council ordered IBF/WBA/WBO light heavyweight champion Sergey Kovalev (27-0-1, 24 KOs) and WBC light heavyweight champion Adonis Stevenson (25-1, 21 KOs) to begin negotiations between them.

If they’re unable to negotiate a fight, then there’s a purse bid that will take place on April 17th. Stevenson still has a fight on April 4th against Sakio Bika (32-6-3, 21 KOs) Pepsi Coliseum, Quebec City, Quebec, Canada.

Sergey Kovalev moved to #10 in Ring’s pound-for-pound rating

kovalev5633By Scott Gilfoid: Last Saturday night IBF/WBA/WBO light heavyweight champion Sergey Kovalev (27-0-1, 24 KOs) impressed a lot of boxing fans with his 8th round stoppage win over former WBC 175lb champion Jean Pascal. The win elevated Kovalev to the #10 spot in the Ring’s pound-for-pound rankings.

It’s high time that Kovalev cracked the top 10, because he’s unbeaten and considered by many fans to be the No.1 fighter in the 175 pound division.

Adonis Stevenson focused on Bika, not impressed with Kovalev’s win over Pascal

Stevenson didn’t say much about Kovalev’s win other than him just not being all too impressed with what he saw in that fight from the Russian fighter.

Kovalev vs. Pascal brings in 1.2 mil viewers on HBO

By Allan Fox: IBF/WBA/WBO light heavyweight champion Sergey Kovalev’s fight last Saturday night against Canada’s Jean Pascal (29-3-1, 17 KOs) was a huge success on HBO Championship Boxing. The fight pulled in a peak of 1.2 million viewers on HBO, with an average of 1.152 million.

While some of the success of the card has to do with Pascal’s own popularity and him being well-known to a lot of casual boxing fans, it’s also a sign that Kovalev (27-0-1, 24 KOs) is quickly picking up a lot of fans.

Kovalev likely to face Nadjib Mohammedi next

kovalev3454By Dan Ambrose: Canada’s Jean Pascal (29-3-1, 17 KOs) won’t be getting an immediate rematch with IBF/WBA/WBO light heavyweight champion Sergey Kovalev (27-0-1, 24 KOs) next despite the fact that the two of them were involved in an exciting fight last Saturday night at the Bell Centre in Montreal, Canada.

Kovalev stopped a game Pascal in the 8th round when referee Luis Pabon abruptly stopped the fight after a slightly dazed Pascal took two hard right hands to the head from Kovalev.

Pascal said after the fight that he wanted an immediate rematch because he was unhappy with the way the fight was stopped so suddenly by Pabon. However, Kovalev has a mandatory defense he has to get out of the way against his IBF mandatory challenger Nadjib Mohammedi (37-3-1, 23 KOs).

Kovalev wanted to floor Pascal in the 8th, but the referee prevented him from doing it

kovalev3222444(Photo Credits: David Spagnolo/Main Events) By Dan Ambrose: Last night, former WBC 175 pound belt holder Jean Pascal (29-3-1, 17 KOs) was saved from himself by referee Luis Pabon who did Pascal a big favor in stopping his fight against IBF, WBA, WBO light heavyweight champion Sergey Kovalev (27-0-1, 24 KOs) in the 8th round with Pascal still on his feet and in command of his mental faculties at the Bell Centre in Montreal, Canada.

Pascal was batted around the ring in the 8th round until the referee stopped the fight after Pascal took two right hands that he didn’t even try and block from Kovalev.

Pabon could have let the fight continue, but he would have left Pascal in a position where he’d have risked getting dropped hard. Pascal looked like he was only a couple punches away from getting knocked out.

By Allan Fox: #1 WBO, #6 WBA Jean Pascal (29-3-1, 17 KOs) isn’t happy with the stoppage last night in his 8th round knockout loss to IBF/WBA/WBO light heavyweight champion Sergey Kovalev (27-0-1, 24 KOs) at the Bell Centre in Montreal, Canada.

Pascal was hurt badly in the 8th round with a left hand shot from Kovalev that sent Pascal falling against the ropes. The action was briefly stopped by referee Luis Pabon.

Kovalev Stops Pascal in First Unified Title Defense

In the much-anticipated main event of the evening, Sergey “Krusher” Kovalev (27-0-1, 24 KOs)* and Jean Pascal (29-3-1, 17 KOs) pleased fans with an action-packed battle. Both fighters started by trading some good shots, but Kovalev started to throw some nasty combinations in the third round to take the wind out of the hostile crowd at the Centre Bell in Montreal. Just before the end of the third round, Kovalev knocked Pascal through the ropes but Pascal was saved by the bell. Sergey came out swinging in the fourth to try to capitalize on the near KO, but Pascal managed to stay on his feet and land a huge right to show Kovalev he was still in the fight. As the bell rang to end the fourth round, both men were still trading big shots.
