Pacquiao getting $18 million guaranteed for Rios bout

roach73By Chris Williams: While Floyd Mayweather Jr. got $100 million for his last fight against Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, Manny Pacquiao (54-5-2, 38 KO’s) will be getting a guarantee payday of $18 million for this Saturday’s fight against Brandon Rios (31-1-1, 23 KO’s) in Macao, China. Pacquiao could get a lot more if the fight does well on pay-per-view in the United States, which is where Pacquiao will be making a good portion of his money. He could make as much as $30 million after the PPV totals come in.

His promoter Bob Arum chose China for Pacquiao to fight due to the lower tax burden for Pacquiao from the U.S money he receives from fans. Arum also wants to open the Chinese markets for PPV in the future, so he’s trying to create interest by holding cards there and having former two-time Olympic gold medalist Zou Shiming (2-0) on his Macao fight cards.

Rios not worried about Pacquiao’s speed advantage

rios76By Chris Williams: Brandon Rios (31-1-1, 23 KO’s) is giving up a lot in the speed department in his fight this Saturday night against Manny Pacquiao (54-5-2, 38 KO’s) in Macao, China. It’s something that many boxing fans will put Rios at a huge disadvantage in this fight, and this is one of the major reasons why Rios is considered a huge underdog.

Rios is not worried about it at all, as he feels that he’s going to adapt and make adjustments to Pacquiao’s speed just like he did in his fight with the much faster Miguel Acosta back in 2011. Rios struggled in the first 3 rounds, but then he adjusted and was able to take over the fight and stop Acosta in the 10th round. Acosta was never the same fighter after that bout.

Pacquiao vs. Rios: Is it now personal?

roach445By Gerardo Granados: Once both Brandon Rios and Antonio Margarito mocked trainer Freddie Roach for his Parkinson disease and the result that came from that was a terrible beating for Margarito with trainer Robert Garcia allowing his fighter to take unnecessary punishment. Now Alex Ariza, a member of team Rios, added fuel to a burning relation.

If you have a discussion and the tempers get hot you´ll have to choose to take it to the next level or simply yell at each other but once you throw a punch you can’t take it back. If in the past there was animosity between camps or former teammates now there might be bad blood.

Roger Mayweather: Rios may whip Pacquiao’s a**!

pac93623By Chris Williams: Roger Mayweather, the uncle and trainer for Floyd Mayweather Jr., is impressed with the opponent that Manny Pacquiao will be facing this Saturday night in Brandon Rios (31-1-1, 23 KO’s) in Macao, China. Roger thinks this could be a very tough fight for Pacquiao and sees this as a good test for him to see where he’s at. However, Roger also thinks that Pacquiao’s inactivity in the last 11 months could make him vulnerable to an upset in this fight.

“They gave a good fight for him then,” Roger said to Hustleboss.

Arum hoping Pacquiao will be as popular as he was for De La Hoya

arum44By Chris Williams: Top Rank promoter Bob Arum is hoping to bring Manny Pacquiao (54-5-2, 38 KO’s) back to his glory days of the past when he fought Oscar De La Hoya and suddenly became a star in the United States after that fight. Arum is hoping he can bring the 34-year-old Pacquiao back to that level of popularity somehow.

It’s not going to be easy for Arum to accomplish this because Pacquiao has lost his last two fights and not looked good in the ring for the last three years. But the first step in Arum’s goal of restoring Pacquiao to his past glory will take place this Saturday night in Macao, China when he faces one of Arum’s stable fighters Brandon Rios. Rios is an easy to hit light welterweight with good power, a great chin, not much hand speed, and a tendency to take a lot of head shots in his fight.

Rios must force Pacquiao into war early, says Malignaggi

rios543343By Dan Ambrose: The conventional wisdom about this Saturday’s fight is that unless the 27-year-old Brandon Rios (31-1-1, 23 KO’s) can get the respect of Manny Pacquiao (54-5-2, 38 KO’s) early and often, he’s going to fall behind on points, take a beating and then get stopped in their Macao, China based fight.

Paulie Malignaggi also seems to believe that Rios’ best chance of beating Manny is to go after Pacquiao early and force him to fight in a furious toe-to-toe battle that will give Rios his best and possibly his only chance of winning. It’s kind of the only way Rios knows how to fight, but it’s also a risky strategy even for him because Pacquiao is usually very good early in his fights.

Robert Garcia: This will be Pacquiao’s last HBO PPV fight

pac674By Chris Williams: Brandon Rios’ trainer Robert Garcia says that this Saturday’s HBO PPV fight between Manny Pacquiao and Rios will be Pacquiao’s last pay-per-view event because Pacquiao’s trainer Freddie Roach will be having a retirement party for the soon to be 35-year-old Pacquiao after he gets knocked out by Rios.

Garcia notes that Pacquiao’s trainer Freddie Roach has mentioned on the last two Pacquiao/Rios 24/7 episodes on HBO that he’ll be advising Pacquiao to retire if he sees that he doesn’t have it anymore. Garcia sees Roach sitting down and having that long talk with Pacquiao after the beating he receives from Rios in this fight.
