Pacquiao-Rios undercard leaves a lot to be desired

pac86By Chris Williams: This Saturday’s pay-per-view card on HBO headlined by Manny Pacquiao vs. Brandon Rios leaves a lot to be desired when it comes to the undercard. For $60, I would have liked to have seen Top Rank put together a little more interesting fights than the ones they got on there.

I know for some boxing fans they don’t care about the undercard, and they’re willing to pay $60 to see Pacquiao and Rios fight all by itself, but I’m not one of them. I like to see a quality undercard for expensive PPV fights, and I’m just not excited about this undercard.

Here are the undercard fights for Saturday’s Pacquiao-Rios fight card from the Cotai Arena, Venetian Resort, Macao, Macao S.A.R., China:

Roach: Pacquiao is just going to box Rios

roach565By Chris Williams: Trainer Freddie Roach doesn’t want Manny Pacquiao (54-5-2, 38 KO’s) to come out looking for a KO this Saturday night against Brandon Rios (31-1-1, 23 KO’s) in Macao, China. This fight is a going to be a little different the last one against Juan Manuel Marquez for Pacquiao. Instead of telling Pacquiao to fight like he did in his mid-20s, Roach wants him to use his boxing skills to box the 27-year-old Rios, and Roach thinks from there that a knockout will spring from that.

Roach said “He’s really talking. He’s got a big mouth. I think he’s like a little kid sometimes. He doesn’t think before he does something. I want to shut these guys up. I want to show Robert Garcia who’s the better trainer, and who has the better gym. We’re just going to box this guy.

Pacquiao: I think I can easily hit Rios in the face

pac787By Chris Williams: Not only is Trainer Freddie Roach cocky about his fighter Manny Pacquiao’s fight this Saturday night against Brandon Rios (31-1-1, 23 KO’s) in Macao, China, but now Pacquiao is starting to sound like he’s getting overconfident about the fight.

I guess you can’t blame Pacquiao, because Rios has been selected by their promoter Bob Arum of Top Rank to make Pacquiao look good due to him being slow and easy to hit. But if Pacquiao isn’t able to get a stoppage of Rios after hitting him repeatedly with head shots, then it’s going to be a big problem for Pacquiao and for Arum for making the fight.

Foreman thinks Pacquiao could shut Rios out

pac673468By Chris Williams: George Foreman believes that Manny Pacquiao (54-5-2, 38 KO’s) has a chance to pitch a shutout against Brandon Rios (31-1-1, 23 KO’s) in their fight on November 23rd in Macao, China. Foreman thinks that Rios will be thrown off from having to travel all the way to China where the time difference could throw Rios off a lot more than Pacquiao, who comes from the nearby Philippines.

For Pacquiao, he only has to travel a little over 800 miles to get to Macao, China. In contrast, Rios has to travel 7,000 miles from California to Macao, China.

Foreman said “Pacquiao, because he lives in the area, it’s probably going to be a shut out if he is on his game at all. I give Pacquiao the hometown decision. How about a home-region decision.”

Bradley: Rios must stay close to Pacquiao to beat him

rios84By Chris Williams: With Manny Pacquiao’s scalp now on his resume, WBO welterweight champion Tim Bradley feels he’s in the position to give advice to Brandon Rios (31-1-1, 23 KO’s) in what he needs to do in order to send Pacquiao down for his third straight loss on November 23rd.

Bradley sees this as a very tough fight for Rios due to Pacquiao’s speed and power, but he definitely sees it as a winnable fight for Rios if he’s smart and chooses to get in close and stay there against Pacquiao to prevent him from using his speed and in and out attacks to dominate.

Leonard wonders if Pacquiao has recovered from KO

pac738By Chris Williams: Sugar Ray Leonard questions whether Manny Pacquiao has fully recovered from his stoppage loss at the hands of Juan Manuel Marquez last December. Leonard feels that there may be some lingering mental issues for Pacquiao from the KO loss that he might drag with him into his fight against 27-year-old Mexican American warrior Brandon Rios (31-1-1, 23 KO’s) on November 23rd that could hinder Pacquiao and prevent him from fighting hard enough to win the fight.

Leonard notes that Pacauiao was supposed to win his last two fights, yet he didn’t and ended up getting beaten by Tim Bradley by decision and Marquez by KO. Now Pacquiao is facing Rios in another fight he’s supposed to win, and it really doesn’t matter what people think Pacqiao will do in this fight because he’s already proven that he can lose fights he was supposed to win.

Does Brandon Rios have a chance of beating Pacquiao?

rios676By Al Hmiel: Brandon Rios 31-1-1 is the hand-picked opponent for the floundering downward career trajectory path of a Manny Pacquiao (54-5-2). Manny is coming off two straight losses to Tim Bradley and the Mexican warrior Juan Manuel Marquez. The KO loss to Juan was devastating and a possible career-ender for Manny.

Not saying Pacquiao will stop fighting, but he will likely never again have that sense of invincibility in the ring. Rios was carefully picked by Pacquiao’s trainer Freddie Roach and and Top Rank to be the boxing Pinata in the ring for Pacquiao to swat away at and flail away.

Porter: Rios will take a lot of shots from Pacquiao

rios545By Chris Williams: Former sparring partner of Manny Pacquiao, the unbeaten welterweight contender Shawn Porter, believes that the boxing world is going to see the old version of Pacquiao in 9 days when he faces Brandon Rios (31-1-1, 23 KO’s) on November 23rd in Macao, China. Porter sees Rios taking a ton of head shots in this fight and he wonders how he’s going to be able to take all those punches for 12 rounds.

We don’t know what Pacquiao is going to do once he starts getting hit by Rios in return. Yes, it’s likely that Pacquiao will land a of quick shots in the early going, but the question is what happens to him when he starts taking big head shots in return.
