Richard Commey no longer with Sauerland Promotions

Image: Richard Commey no longer with Sauerland Promotions

By Chris Williams: After losing two straight fights, #3 IBF lightweight contender Richard Commey and his promoters at Sauerland Events are going to go their separate ways. The once promising 29-year-old Commey’s career has tanked recently with him losing back to back fights to Robert Easter Jr. and Denis Shafikov in 2016.

The loss to the 5’11” Easter Jr. wasn’t that big of a surprise to a lot of boxing fans, as he’s a very good fighter with a lot of punching power. Commey gave Easter Jr all he could handle in losing by a 12 round split decision last September by the scores 115-112, 114-113 for Easter Jr, and 114-113 for Commey.

Manny Pacquiao vs. Kell Brook possible for 2017

Image: Manny Pacquiao vs. Kell Brook possible for 2017

By Scott Gilfoid: IBF welterweight champion Kell Brook’s promoter Eddie Hearn says he’s in talks with WBO 147lb champion Manny Pacquiao’s promoter Bob Arum for a unification fight between the two fighters. However, Hearn says that they seem to be interested in unbeaten contender Jeff Horn (16-0-1, 11 KOs) being Pacquiao’s next opponent for April in Brisbane, Australia. As such, a fight between Brook (36-1, 25 KOs) and Pacquiao wouldn’t take place until the second half of 2017.

It would be a really big IF though, because Arum is eager to have Pacquiao fight another one of his Top Rank fighters in Terence Crawford (30-0, 21 KOs). Horn is co-promoted by Arum, so that would be another fight in which Pacquiao (59-6-2, 38 KOs) is fighting someone from his stable.

Arum needs Pacquiao’s agreement for Horn fight on Apr.22

Image: Arum needs Pacquiao’s agreement for Horn fight on Apr.22

By Chris Williams: Top Rank promoter Bob Arum has an agreement from #2 IBF, #2 WBO Jeff Horn (16-0-1, 11 KOs) for a fight against Arum’s money fighter Manny Pacquiao (59-6-2, 38 KOs) on April 22 at the 52,000 seat Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane, Australia. Arum is now waiting for Pacquiao to approve the fight, according to RingTV.

The fight might not be shown on pay-per-view in the U.S, however. Arum wants it to be shown on free television. It’s unclear how many millions Pacquiao would lose by agreeing to fight Horn rather than a popular fighter that the U.S boxing fans care about.

Roach says Burns or Horn possible for Pacquiao’s April fight

Image: Roach says Burns or Horn possible for Pacquiao’s April fight

By Chris Williams: WBO welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao’s trainer says that WBA World light welterweight champion Ricky Burns (41-5-1, 14 KOs) and #2 IBF, #2 WBO Jeff Horn (16-0-1, 11 KOs) are the two possibilities for Pacquiao’s next fight on April 23.

The 33-year-old Burns is a new name that has been added to the list. Previously, it was just Horn as the potential guy for the fight against the 38-year-old Pacquiao after WBC/WBO light welterweight champion Terence Crawford (30-0, 21 KOs) was ruled out as a possible opponent by Pacquiao’s promoter Bob Arum, who said that fight wouldn’t be taking place in the first half of 2017.

Arum to meet Jeff Horn’s promoters next week to talk Pacquiao fight on April 23

Image: Arum to meet Jeff Horn’s promoters next week to talk Pacquiao fight on April 23

By Chris Williams: Top Rank promoter Bob Arum has a scheduled meeting with Duco Events director Dean Longergan next Tuesday to talk about finalizing a fight between their fighter #2 WBO Jeff Horn (16-0-1, 11 KOs) and Arum’s fighter WBO welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao (59-6-2, 38 KOs) for April 23 at the Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia.

Arum likes this fight for some reason. It’s unclear if there’s a lot of money to be made for Arum and Pacquiao from the Australian boxing fans through pay-per-view, or if he just sees this as a nice safe fight for his fighter.

By Jeff Aranow: WBC World featherweight champion Gary Russell Jr. (27-1, 16 KOs) will be back inside the ring next month in defending his WBC title against 32-year-old Oscar Escandon (25-2, 17 KOs) at the U.S Bank Arena in Cincinnati, Ohio. This will be Russell Jr’s second defense of his title that he won two years ago with a 4th round knockout victory over former champion Jhonny Gonzalez in March 2015.

Russell Jr. has since defended his title once in beating fringe contender Patrick Hyland by a 2nd round knockout last year in April. That was the only fight for 28-year-old Russell Jr. in 2016.

Jeff Horn: I can beat Pacquiao

Image: Jeff Horn: I can beat Pacquiao

By Chris Williams: Unbeaten #2 WBO, #2 IBF Jeff Horn (16-0-1, 11 KOs) could be the next opponent for WBO welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao (59-6-2, 38 KOs) to make his first defense of his title against in April. Pacquiao’s promoter Bob Arum is looking to finalize a fight for the 38-year-old Pacquiao, and it could be Horn that gets the call.

The fight would take place in Horn’s native country of Australia in Brisbane. He can draw a lot of boxing fans if the fight takes place there. Just how many is unclear, but definitely a lot more than Pacquiao can bring in if he were to fight in the U.S.

Pacquiao’s fight against Horn possible for Australia

Image: Pacquiao’s fight against Horn possible for Australia

By Chris Williams: Manny Pacquiao could be back inside the ring against Top Rank fighter Jeff Horn (16-0-1, 11 KOs) in April in Brisbane, Australia. The talk is the fight would take place at the Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane. This is part of Pacquiao’s 85-year-old promoter Bob Arum’s idea to make Pacquiao a worldwide star by having him fight in Australia or some other venue. However, with Pacquiao’s career about to end, it makes one skeptical if that’s Arum’s true goal.

Pacquiao could be facing Terence Crawford in the second half of 2017 the U.S. That’s a fight that Pacquiao will likely lose due to Crawford’s youth and mobility. If Pacquiao retires after that fight, which is what some think will happen, then you can pretty much forget about this idea of Arum’s to turn him into a worldwide star.

Arum wants Pacquiao’s fight in April on free television

Image: Arum wants Pacquiao’s fight in April on free television

By Chris Williams: Manny Pacquiao’s promoter Bob Arum of Top Rank is reportedly interested in having his next fight televised on free television on April 22 rather than on PPV. It’s unclear if this is Arum’s own idea or if this is something Pacquiao is on board with. The last we heard, Pacquiao wants a $20 million guarantee to fight Arum’s fighter Terence Crawford.

If Pacquiao wants that kind of money, then it’s hard to understand why Arum is talking about wanting him to fight on free television. It doesn’t make sense.

Arum says Pacquiao vs. Horn could be next, not Crawford

Image: Arum says Pacquiao vs. Horn could be next, not Crawford

By Chris Williams: Top Rank promoter Bob Arum says he wants his fighter WBO welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao (59-6-2, 38 KOs) to fight #2 IBF, #2 WBO contender Jeff Horn (16-0-1, 11 KOs) in his next fight in the first half of 2017 and NOT Terence Crawford.

Arum doesn’t want Pacquiao to fight the 29-year-old Crawford next. Arum co-promotes Horn, who fought in the 2012 Olympics for Australia. It’s unclear if Arum is hoping to turn Horn into a star like he is with Crawford. But putting Horn in with Pacquiao will at least make him a bigger name like it’s done with Pacquiao’s past opponents like Tim Bradley.
