Sanchez: Mike Perez might be another Golovkin at heavyweight

perez65By Allan Fox: Trainer Abel Sanchez is very excited about his fighter heavyweight Mike Perez (20-0, 12 KO’s) following his 10 round unanimous decision win over the previously unbeaten Magomed Abdusalamov (18-1, 18 KO’s) last Saturday night in Madison Square Garden. Sanchez just started training the 6’0″, 235 lb. Perez not long ago, and he feels that he has the talent to be the heavyweight division’s version of Gennady Golovkin.

Having seen the 28-year-old Perez against Abdusalamov and in other bouts, I’m not sure that Perez has the kind of power needed to be another Golovkin at heavyweight. He doesn’t really look like a big puncher. Abdusalmov looked like the much superior slugger than Perez last Saturday. I realize that Abduslamov took a lot of punishment to the head in that fight, but I don’t think that’s because Perez is a huge puncher.

Deontay Wilder vs. Mike Perez would be a good fight

perez111By Scott Gilfoid: Unbeaten Cuban heavyweight Mike Perez (20-0, 12 KO’s) looked very impressive last night in defeating Magomed Abdusalamov (18-1, 18 KO’s) by a 10 round unanimous decision on the undercard of the Gennady Golovkin vs. Curtis Stevens bout at Madison Square Garden in New York. Perez gave Abdusalamov a real beating in winning by the scores 97-92, 97-92 and 95-94.

Since it’s unlikely that the World Boxing Council will strip WBC heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko anytime soon, I’d like to see #3 WBC Deontay Wilder facing Perez next in a kind of stay busy fight for Deontay to show off his talent to the U.S audiences, and to show the difference between him and the 6’0″ Cuban fighter.

Chagaev-Perez, Kentikian-Moreno on December 1st

Image: Chagaev-Perez, Kentikian-Moreno on December 1stBy Jason Kim: Former WBA heavyweight champion Ruslan Chagaev (30-2-1, 19 KO’s) will have a real test on his hands against the 27-year-old unbeaten Cuban Mike Perez (18-0, 12 KO’s) in a scheduled 8 round bout on December 1st at the Burg-Waechter Castello, Düsseldorf, Nordrhein-Westfalen, Germany.

It’s perhaps a good thing for the 34-year-old Chagaev that the fight is only scheduled for eight rounds because he’s been looking a little heavy as of late and having to carry around the extra fat for another four rounds would be difficult against a busy fighter like Perez.

Ruslan Chagaev vs. Mike Perez on 12/1; Fury out of luck

Image: Ruslan Chagaev vs. Mike Perez on 12/1; Fury out of luckBy Scott Gilfoid: Well, it looks like Tyson Fury’s promoter Mick Hennessy couldn’t land him the fight he was looking for against former WBA World heavyweight champion Ruslan Chagaev (30-2-1, 19 KO’s) that Fury was hoping to get for December. #3 WBA Chagaev is now fighting unbeaten Cuban Mike Perez (18-0, 12 KO’s) on December 1st at the Burg-Waechter Castello, in Dusseldorf, Germany.

I guess the money must not have been good enough for Chagaev to face Fury. It really doesn’t matter because I see the Ireland-based Perez as a better heavyweight than Fury anyway and if Chagaev can beat him it’ll really help out his career in a big way getting him closer to another world title shot. Beating the 6-foot Perez won’t be easy, though, because he’s like another Mike Tyson, a fighter with a good power a high work rate.
