HBO loses Mayweather to Showtime/CBS

floyd4222By Chris Williams: HBO has got to be feeling the pain today at the news that their star, the biggest pay per view star in all of sports Floyd Mayweather Jr., has left them and signed a six-fight, 30 month deal with Showtime/CBS. Dan Rafael of ESPN is right; this has got to be the darkest day for HBO ever.

They lost Manny Pacquiao for one fight, and we saw what happened after that. But to lose an even bigger star in Mayweather, that’s going to be tough on HBO. They don’t have anyone to fill in the void that Mayweather Jr. has left.

Adrien Broner is one of HBO’s darlings right now, but he’s not ready to be promoted to pay-per-view fights, partly because of the poor match-making his promoters at Golden Boy Promotions are doing for him.

Mayweather signs six-fight deal with Showtime/CBS; faces Guerrero on 5/4

floyd5453By Allan Fox: Unbeaten Floyd Mayweather Jr. has reportedly signed a six-fight deal with Showtime/CBS pay per view deal that could take Mayweather to the end of his career. The deal is for 30 months, so Mayweather is going to have to stay active if he’s going to squeeze in all of those fights.

He’s not going to be able to fight once a year like he’s been doing if he wants to get in all six of the fights. Mayweather’s first fight of the new contract will be against Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero on May 4th.

Schaefer: Guerrero is going to be a tough fight for Mayweather

guerrero223By Chris Williams: Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer sees potential trouble brewing ahead for unbeaten Floyd Mayweather Jr. in his fight on May 4th against Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero on Showtime.

Schaefer points out that Guerrero hasn’t lost a fight in six years, and he’s younger than Mayweather by six years ago 29. Guerrero’s fighting at a really high level fight now after beating Selcuk Aydin and Andre Berto in his last two fights at welterweight.

Mayweather will easily handle Guerrero on May 4th

floyd56By Dan Ambrose: Floyd Mayweather Jr. (43-0, 26 KO’s) still hasn’t officially announced his May 4th fight with Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero (31-1-1, 18 KO’s) yet, but he’s expected to any day now, possibly this week. They need to get the fight announced so they can start building interest with fans to sell it on pay per view.

Mayweather has lost a lot of his ability to move around the ring in the last three years. Starting with his fight with Shane Mosley in 2010, Mayweather has become almost entirely a stationary fighter. He does move, but he walks now instead of moving around quickly on his toes the way he did in his prime.

Mayweather-Guerrero & Canelo-Trout expected to be announced within days for 5/4 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas

mayweather34545By Chris Williams: Golden Boy Promotions matchmaker Robert Diaz is reporting that they are on the verge of announcing the May 4th fight card headlined by Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero, and WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez vs. WBA World junior middleweight champion Austin Trout at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada. Golden Boy offered Canelo other opponents besides Trout, but Canelo insisted on facing the tougher Trout.

The announcement for the card is days away. They obviously have to do this as soon as possible because it’s already mid-February, and if they want this to be a huge pay per view card then they’re going to have to start marketing it soon as they can.

Mayweather-Guerrero hold-up not related to money

floyd33By Dan Ambrose: The hold-up between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and WBC interim welterweight champion Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero (31-1-1, 18 KO’s) is not money related for their proposed May 4th fight at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada, according to Steve Kim. There’s something on Mayweather’s end that he’s not happy with, so he’s holding off on making that fight.

The money has reportedly been already agreed on for Guerrero, but something else is keeping the fight from being signed. It could be that Mayweather is having second thoughts about fighting the Guerrero or something else entirely.

Guerrero wanted $4 mil, but Mayweather only paying $2.5 mil, says Roach

guerrero123By Chris Williams: Trainer Freddie Roach has his opinions why WBC welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. has decided to go with IBF welterweight champion Devon Alexander instead of Robert Guerrero, the fighter that most boxing fans thought Mayweather was set to fight until recently.

Roach said to ibftimes.co.uk when asked why Mayweather was leaning in the direction of Alexander now, “He [Guerrero] wanted $4million and Floyd said he would get $2.5m but he didn’t want to take it. He didn’t want it so Floyd moved on to the next person and he still might move onto someone else.”

Jeff Mayweather: Guerrero will get KO’d if he fights aggressive against Floyd Jr.

guerrero467By Chris Williams: Jeff Mayweather, the uncle of unbeaten Floyd Mayweather Jr, thinks WBC interim welterweight champion Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero (31-1-1, 18 KO’s) will have to changed his fighting strategy completely when and if he gets the May 4th fight with Floyd Jr. because he thinks the aggressiveness that Guerrero showed against Andre Berto recently would get him knocked out quick if he tries that against Floyd Jr.

Jeff said to fighthubtv.com “Floyd is too smart for either one of them [Saul “Canelo” Alvarez & Guerrero]. With Groves being aggressive, he’s going to have to change that or he’s going to get knocked out because Floyd will run him into something. If he fights Floyd the same way he fought Andre Berto.”

Mayweather: Me fighting Guerrero is just a rumor; not sure who I’ll fight

floyd545By Chris Williams: Unbeaten Floyd Mayweather Jr. cleared up some confusion about his May 4th fight date by saying he’s still not sure who he’ll be facing next for that date.

Mayweather Jr. said on his twitter “As of right now I don’t know who I’m fighting on May 4th. Me fighting Roberto Guerrero is just a rumor.”

Boxing fans have been assuming that Floyd will be fighting Guerrero for some reason, perhaps mostly because he’s Mayweather’s mandatory, he’s Mexican, and Mayweather Jr. has chosen to fight on the Mexican holiday Cinco de Mayo.

Floyd Mayweather Jr, May 4th awaits

mayweather322By Tom Drury: Floyd Mayweather is back in the ring on May 4th, and it’s looking like Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero will be his challenger. Many fans have criticized this choice of opponent for Mayweather (nothing new there). Guerrero will be entering the ring full of confidence coming off the back of two good wins against genuine welterweight fighters Selcuk Aydin, ranked (3) by the WBC and Andre Berto, ranked (12).

Mayweather, as I’ve detailed in previous articles, has a resume made up with undefeated fighters, (1) ranked fighters and contenders, multiple division world champions and knockout artists. 43-0 and again entering the ring against a double world champion in the form of Guerrero. Guerrero is a tough fight for Mayweather; his style is relentless sometimes dirty, as seen in the Berto fight. Guerrero likes to rough up his opponents and force a fight on the inside.
