If Canelo believes he can beat Mayweather, he should fight him at 147

canelo400By Dan Ambrose: WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez isn’t popular enough to call the shots to Floyd Mayweather Jr. to tell him that he has to come up to 154 to fight him. If Canelo only 22-years-old, and he doesn’t have the experience or the fan base to pressure Mayweather to ever fight him at 154.

When you’re a young fighter like Canelo, you’re supposed to pay your dues and fight the more experienced, more talented and the much accomplished fighter at his own weight, not yours.

Smith: Canelo rules out fighting Mayweather at a catchweight

canelo5434By Dan Ambrose: WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez has reportedly said no to the idea of him fighting WBC welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. at a catchweight of 150-151, according to Stephen A. Smith of ESPN. Canelo only wants the fight at 154, so if Mayweather wants to fight him, he’ll have to come up to Canelo’s weight class to make the fight happen.

Smith said to ESPN “Canelo is a big boy and he’s a bigger boy. He’s a big dude…he walks around bigger. Canelo is on record saying he won’t do the catchweight…but if he wants to make big money, he’s going to have to shave off three pounds and not fight at 154. Canelo is really a junior middleweight that an fight as a middleweight.”

Mayweather vs. Canelo: Yes, it will happen

floyd#900By Mauricio Carranza: Believe it or not the fight between WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and Floyd Mayweather Jr. will happen. Believe me, it’s just matter of time, I can guarantee it. First off, we need to understand Maywether is a very smart fighter and an even smarter business man. He understands exactly how the “business” of boxing work. There is risk and reward.

The risk being fighting a strong bigger opponent with good hand speed and very dangerous right hand, and please understand when I say bigger I mean frame-wise because Canelo might be an inch taller than Floyd if that.

Floyd Mayweather Jr: Are there any doubts about his status?

floyd#705By Babatis Banda: Putting the accusations aside, does anybody out there doubt that Mayweather is the best P4P fighter today? Does anybody out there doubt that Floyd Mayweather Junior is the most gifted fighter this era has witnessed?

Does anyone out there doubt that Mayweather Junior has always made easy work of his opponents? Does anybody out there surely doubt that Mayweather is a class above the rest?

I seem to have a feeling that there is serious luck of competition out there for Floyd Mayweather Jnr, such that whoever he fights, some section of the fans will always trash his opposition looking at the ease at which he beats them. Do not be fooled, all these fighters Mayweather is beating are looking good going into the fight.

De La Hoya: Canelo is not Guerrero; Mayweather is not invincible

floyd#700By Dan Ambrose: Oscar De La Hoya believe that Floyd Mayweather Jr. (44-0, 26 KO’s) is ripe to be picked off by De La Hoya’s red-haired, 22-year-old, 172 pound WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (42-0-1, 30 KO’s) in September if Mayweather would only agree to the fight.

De La Hoya seems to be getting impatient with Mayweather not readily accepting the fight with the light heavyweight-sized Canelo. De La Hoya wants Mayweather to sign for the fight because he feels he’s got someone that can finally beat him. Granted, Canelo outweighs Mayweather by close to 30 pounds but that’s besides the point.

Schaefer insists he’s making progress with Mayweather-Canelo negotiations

canelo4543By Dan Ambrose: Dan Rafael reports that Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer that he’s making good progress on a fight between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, and that the talk of the fight taking place at 147 or a catchweight is totally incorrect.

Rafael said on his twitter: “Schaefer: All good, working on the fight. So far so good. It’s amazing how some of these other (sites) are spreading all these wrong stories. Schaefer emailed me, said as he works on Floyd-Canelo reports Floyd insists ‘on 147 & Canelo would be OK with a catch weight, it’s all BS.’”

Floyd Sr: Canelo has to fight at 147 if he wants Floyd Jr. fight

canelo54By Dan Ambrose: Floyd Mayweather’s father Floyd Sr. said that if WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez wants a fight against Floyd Jr. in September then he’s going to have to come in at 147 lbs at the weigh-in the day before the fight.

If Canelo can’t make weight then he doesn’t get the fight. It’s as simple as that. Floyd Sr. suspects Canelo will rehydrate up to 170 lbs, and he doesn’t want his son fighting a light heavyweight-sized fighter, even though he still thinks Floyd Jr. can beat him. But he does see the weight as potentially causing Floyd Jr. problems.

Canelo knows what he needs to do to face Mayweather

canelo65By Dan Ambrose: If 22-year-old WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (42-0-1, 30 KO’s) wants the fight with Floyd Mayweather Jr. (44-0, 26 KO’s, and the fame that goes with that fight, then Canelo is going to have to have to take off some of that weight and down to 147 lbs. to make the fight happen.

If he can’t do it or is unwilling to do it, then he needs to focus on fighting other welterweights instead of Mayweather. There’s no point in Canelo, his team, Showtime or any of his fans to continue to talk about the fight if Canelo isn’t ready to move down to 147 to take the fight. Mayweather’s team has spoken and they’ve set the conditions for the fight.

Why should Mayweather fight Canelo at 154?

canelo544By Dan Ambrose: There are a lot of fans of WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez coming out of the woodwork saying that the more popular and much accomplished Floyd Mayweather Jr. should move up in weight to 154 to accommodate Canelo so that he doesn’t have to put in an effort to lose some weight to get down to 147 to fight Mayweather.

They reason that it’s easier for Mayweather to gain weight than it is for Canelo to lose weight. Their argument is centered on the grounds that Mayweather has fought twice at 154 in his 17-year pro career and that’s enough for them to feel he should have no problems coming up in weight.

Canelo will likely have to come down to 147 for Mayweather fight

canelo33323By Dan Ambrose: Steve Kim is saying that Floyd Mayweather Jr. doesn’t want to come back up in weight to fight the young 22-year-old WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez at 154, and that if the Mexican fighter wants to fight boxing’s number #1 money fighter, he’ll have to come down to 147 to make the fight happen.

Additionally, there will be NO catchweights for Canelo. He won’t get to meet Mayweather halfway between 147 and 154, and they rehydrate up to 172-175 lbs for the fight. If Canelo wants the fight, he has to come down to 147.

I’m hearing also talk of a possible rehydration clause that could be in effect if Canelo does come down to 147.
