Floyd Sr: Canelo has to fight at 147 if he wants Floyd Jr. fight

canelo54By Dan Ambrose: Floyd Mayweather’s father Floyd Sr. said that if WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez wants a fight against Floyd Jr. in September then he’s going to have to come in at 147 lbs at the weigh-in the day before the fight.

If Canelo can’t make weight then he doesn’t get the fight. It’s as simple as that. Floyd Sr. suspects Canelo will rehydrate up to 170 lbs, and he doesn’t want his son fighting a light heavyweight-sized fighter, even though he still thinks Floyd Jr. can beat him. But he does see the weight as potentially causing Floyd Jr. problems.

Mayweather Sr. told hustleboss.com that Floyd Jr. weighed only 146 lbs when he stepped inside the ring with Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero on May 4th of this month in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Mayweather Sr. said to Chris Robinson of Hustleboss.com “If they do the fight that’s [147 lbs] where it’s going to be…I bet you he is somewhere around 170 pounds, maybe more than that.”

If Canelo agrees to fight Mayweather he would have to agree to the full random blood testing, which would go all throughout the training camp all the way up to the fight. Will Canelo agree to that? I would hope so because that would be the only way he’s doing to get the fight.

Taking off all that water weight is going to be awfully hard for the Mexican fighter to do because it would start with his training camp. He’d have to trim down some of that light heavyweight muscle on his frame and get down to at least super middleweight in size and from there he could start to lose water weight the week of the fight.

I don’t see how Canelo can do this without being really weakened to the point where he won’t have a chance in the fight, especially with the way he gasses out and needs to rest against the ropes. It’s going to be a slaughter if he does make agree to come down to 147 for the fight.

Canelo is young enough to take the weight off, but he’s still going to have to come into the fight at a lower weight because there’s no way he’s going to be able to drain down from 170+ to get down to 147 without being drained.

Canelo will have to take off at least 7 pounds of muscle during the training camp and be around 165 lbs when he starts to water drain to get to 147.

I see Canenlo not making the weight and then Mayweather having to make a big decision whether he still wants the fight to take place. Mayweather needs to be a huge weight penalty in the contract to put a fire under Canelo’s backside so that he won’t want to come over the limit.

I’d say $5 million per pound weight penalty would be a good one. That way if Canelo comes in at 148 lbs at the weigh-in and can’t take off that pounds, then Mayweather will take the $5 million from Canelo’s earnings for the fight.
