De La Hoya: Canelo is not Guerrero; Mayweather is not invincible

floyd#700By Dan Ambrose: Oscar De La Hoya believe that Floyd Mayweather Jr. (44-0, 26 KO’s) is ripe to be picked off by De La Hoya’s red-haired, 22-year-old, 172 pound WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (42-0-1, 30 KO’s) in September if Mayweather would only agree to the fight.

De La Hoya seems to be getting impatient with Mayweather not readily accepting the fight with the light heavyweight-sized Canelo. De La Hoya wants Mayweather to sign for the fight because he feels he’s got someone that can finally beat him. Granted, Canelo outweighs Mayweather by close to 30 pounds but that’s besides the point.

De La Hoya said to holylosangeles.com “I know Mayweather wants the fight, and he’ll take the fight…Canelo is not Guerrero. Nobody is invincible. No fighter retires undefeated…even the best in the world has to lose.”

It definitely helps to beat the best when you’ve got a fighter that outweighs the best by 26-30 pounds like Canelo. That has a way of negating the talent of the best. Just stick the best in with a fighter 30 pounds heavier than him and watch him get humbled.
It’s true that Canelo is not another Guerrero. He’s much heavier than Guerrero.

I don’t think Mayweather is ready to be beaten by someone in his own weight class or even at 154, but if you put him in with a light heavyweight, it’s possible he could lose.

Seriously now, Mayweather needs to stand firm with Canelo and his crew about what they need to do if they want the with him, starting with requiring that Canelo melt down to 147 lbs. if he wants the fight. Additionally, there needs to be a rehydration clause of 156 lbs, tops. If Canelo doesn’t agree to that then he can go fight Alfredo Angulo or Erislandy Lara.

Canelo also needs to agree to full random blood tests from the start of the training camp until an hour before the fight starts on September 14th. Those should be the conditions: The fight taking place at 147, no catch weights, rehydration clause of 156 lbs max with a weight penalty of $2 million per pound, and full random blood testing.

If Canelo can’t agree to those simple requests then he needs to move on because Mayweather has other options. There’s a long line of quality fighters just waiting to get a shot at Mayweather, and he doesn’t have to worry about being outweighed by 30 pounds against these guys.
