By Allan Fox: WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (42-0-1, 30 KO’s) and WBC welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. (44-0, 26 KO’s) have both agreed on a fight on September 14th at a catch-weight of 152 pounds at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.
The fight will be televised on Showtime/CBS and it promises to be the biggest boxing PPV event of the year by far, although it’s not likely big enough to eclipse the PPV all time record of 2.4 million buys between Mayweather and Oscar De La Hoya in 2007.
Canelo isn’t as popular as De La Hoya was back then, so it’s going to be a fight that will likely result in a figure close to the 1.5 million mark in terms of overall PPV buys.

That’s unlikely to happen, considering that Alvarez is naturally a middleweight so it’d take a lot out of his body if he were to drain down to 147 lb. We’ve seen the effect that’s had on fighters on the past, like Oscar De La Hoya when he fought Manny Pacquiao.

However, Alvarez still has to cement his status as one of the best fighters on the planet. Firstly, I would like to say I was a critic of Alvarez due to his padded and weak resume and was one of the first to speak out believing he would be schooled by Austin Trout.

If Canelo only 22-years-old, and he doesn’t have the experience or the fan base to pressure Mayweather to ever fight him at 154.

Smith of ESPN. Canelo only wants the fight at 154, so if Mayweather wants to fight him, he’ll have to come up to Canelo’s weight class to make the fight happen.
