Canelo talking himself out of Mayweather fight

canelo76By Dan Ambrose: 22-year-old Saul “Canelo” Alvarez is showing his youth with his all thumbs approach to getting an import career-changing fight with Floyd Mayweather Jr. Canelo, despite being at the beginning stages of his career, is telling Mayweather at what weight their fight has to take place at before agrees to it.

In an interview with Univision Deports, Canelo said “I’ll fight at my weight [154] against Mayweather. I cannot go lower.”

It almost seems like Canelo is calling the shots. If he’s doing this at 22 with Mayweather what is Canelo going to be like in five or six years. It’s difficult to imagine. I can picture Canelo telling his opposition what hoops they have to jump through in order to get a fight with him.

Hopefully, agreeing to open scoring won’t be one of them because we saw big that went over in Canelo’s last fight with WBA junior middleweight champion Austin Trout. With the wide scored the judges gave Canelo after 8 rounds, it let him coast the last four rounds, doing very little and making the fight boring.

By Canelo saying the fight with Mayweather has to take place at 154, he’s essentially talked himself out of the fight all by himself. Telling boxing’s most popular fighter Mayweather what weight the fight will take place at is Canelo negotiating himself out of the fight all by himself.

If Canelo’s going to try to negotiate fights like that with Mayweather then he needs to forget all about ever getting a fight with him because that’s not how you do it. Canelo can’t be calling the shots when he’s not accomplished enough to dictate the terms of the fight.

Canelo’s biggest fight of his career was against Trout, and let’s face it the facts: Canelo looked like an exhausted fighter unable to fight hard for the three minutes of every round. The open scoring might have saved Canelo from losing that fight because if he had to work hard instead of taking the last four rounds off with his huge lead, he might have been knocked out. I had the fight going to Trout because he outworked Canelo.
