De La Hoya believes Canelo is fighting Mayweather at the right time

canelo7By Chris Williams: Oscar De La Hoya of Golden Boy Promotions believes that WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez is getting Floyd Mayweather Jr. at the right time in Mayweather’s career with him showing signs of aging at 36 and with Canelo coming off of a 12 round unanimous decision win over WBA junior middleweight champion Austin Trout last April in San Antonio, Texas. Trout is the perfect opponent for Canelo to get ready for Mayweather.

De La Hoya said to RingTV.com “I don’t think it’s too soon [for Canelo]. I think that it’s the perfect moment…Canelo is only getting better…this is the perfect time, the perfect time.”

Mayweather vs. Alvarez = Mayweather vs Gatti

alvarez4445by Bob Smith: Let us be honest with ourselves: Arturo Gatti was an excellent fighter who was also one of the most courageous in recent memory, and he is also a boxing hall of famer with three fight of the year candidates to his credit, and is more or less a real-life incarnation of Rocky.

However, when he entered the Ring against Floyd Mayweather, despite the fact that Gatti was by far the fan favorite and boxing with the home crowd advantage, Mayweather completely dominated Gatti and ended up with a six round stoppage victory.

Mayweather wanted Canelo fight weight to be lower but agreed with 152 catch-weight

floyd5By Dan Ambrose: Floyd Mayweather Jr. said that it was Saul “Canelo” Alvarez’s side that asked for their fight to be at a catch-weight. He didn’t bring it up, but once they did bring it up he asked for it to be halfway between 147 and 154, Mayweather said to Fighthype.com.

However, Canelo’s side wouldn’t agree to a catch-weight down the middle, so when they offered 152, Mayweather said yes to that immediately.

Let’s be frank about this. 2 pounds off from the 154 lb. weight isn’t much of a catch-weight. It should be at 150.5 lbs. if you’re being fair about it, but Mayweather was nice and accepted the 152 when he probably should have refused it.

Floyd “Money” Mayweather Jr. vs. Saul “Canelo” Alvarez September 14th, MGM Grand, Los Vegas

alvarez545By Omar Torres: It’s finally happening, a mega fight in boxing between Floyd “Money” Mayweather Jr. vs. Saul “Canelo” Alvarez on September 14th at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada. This fight could have the chance to match the previous record set by Oscar De La Hoya vs. Mayweather in 2007, and this match can help boxing rise again, at least here in the U.S.

It’s too bad that we might never see Mayweather – Manny Pacquiao, but at least we get to see this very interesting fight. Mayweather is finally going to be taking on a powerful young fighter in the peek of his career. This would be the first time Floyd faces a strong young stud such as Canelo in years. Canelo has never faced an opponent with the supreme boxing skills such as Floyd “Money” Mayweather, Austin Trout being the closest.

Mayweather: Genius or Insanity?

mayweather232By Rusty Nate: Depending on what side of the world you are on, your waking up or going to bed with the news that Floyd Mayweather has agreed a fight with none other than Saul “Canelo” Alvarez for September 14th at the MGM Grand, Las Vegas.

What a turn up for the books! Mayweather has done what few expected him to and signed to fight probably the most dangerous on form opponent that he could find in Alvarez. Whats more we are hearing that the contract includes a pretty non existent catch weight of 152lbs as well as NO rehydration clause. I am shocked, surprised, respectful of Mayweather but also a little bit confused with a few doubts in my head.

Mayweather chooses Canelo for September 14th – Breaking news!!!

floyd#261By Dan Ambrose: Just minutes ago, Floyd Mayweather Jr. tweeted that he’ll be facing WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez on September 14th after all at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada. ***News update*** the fight will be fought at a catch-weight of 152 lbs. Mayweather is really being nice here because 152 is nothing. That’s not even really a catch-weight. The proper halfway point between 147 and 154 is 150.5. Mayweather is giving Canelo an extra 1.5 lbs.

There’s no word yet about whether there will a rehydration clause in the contract to keep Canelo from blowing up to 172-175 after the weigh-in.

Mayweather said this on his twitter: “I chose my opponent for September 14th and it’s Canelo Alvarez. I’m giving fans what they want. It will be at the MGM Grand.”

Mayweather-Canelo: To be the Man, you have to beat the Man

floyd#15By Ken Wills: WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (42-0-1, 30 KO’s) can make all the demands he wants but the fact is he wants what unbeaten Floyd Mayweather Jr. (44-0, 26 KO’s) has. Therefore, he needs to earn it. I mean, let’s be real here.

Except for us hardcore boxing fans, who is Canelo Alvarez? Why should Floyd Mayweather give any advantages to a younger, stronger, bigger fighter? Mayweather has nothing to gain by even fighting Canelo? Are people going to all of a sudden say he’s the best ever on account of that win?

The real question is and has been since the whole Manny “Pac Man” Pacquiao ordeal is not who is Mayweather ducking now, but what are these fighters willing to sacrifice to become a legend, to become great. Pac Man wanted a 50/50 split, although no matter what the split it would have resulted in his biggest payday.

Should Mayweather fight Canelo in September?

By Chip Mitchell: Golden Boy CEO Richard Schaefer alleges that he’s been actively negotiating a September showdown between Floyd “Money” Mayweather and Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, a fighter almost 15 years his junior.

The sticking point seems to be at which weight the fight will take place. Neither side appears to be backing down, as Alvarez, who fights at 154 and Mayweather at 147 stand firm.

Schaefer to start working on Canelo-Mayweather fight this week

floyd#31By Dan Ambrose: Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer says he’s going to be starting the wheels in motion this week for a September 14th fight between his fighter WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (42-0-1, 30 KO’s) and Floyd Mayweather Jr. (44-0, 26 KO’s), even though Mayweather hasn’t asked him too. Schaefer wants the fight for Canelo and Golden Boy.

Schaefer told Steve Kim at Maxboxing.com “I’ll be meeting this week with Floyd’s adviser and we will start having conversations. I know that Floyd is the kind of fighter who doesn’t turn down anyone. He’s always fought anyone and everyone and I know that with Canelo, that’s the fight he really wants.”

Canelo should not expect Floyd to fight him!

IMG_2337(Photo credit: Sumio Yamada) By Juan dela Cruz: After a dominating performance against Austin “No Doubt” Trout at Alamodome, San Antonio, Texas last April 21, 2013, which proved once and for all that he is ready to face the elite in his division, Saul “Canelo” Alvarez is now eyeing Floyd Mayweather Jr for his next outing.

Unfortunately for Canelo, Floyd Jr is not keen on facing him mainly because Canelo is now a big threat to Floyd. This was already expected by boxing analysts and sports fans around the world as we know Floyd won’t face any threat to his “0” record and Canelo is one of them. After dealing Trout his first loss in his career, Canelo proved that he is no joke and that he is at the elite level. Floyd cannot put his contract in Showtime in jeopardy if he will face Alvarez at this time knowing it will be a sure loss for him.
